We loved Massa Marittima and its great duomo (cathedral) which dates back nearly 1,000 years. It is currently under construction in the interior but is still accessible and the traveler can still see its many fine works of art. It is a smallish church unlike the ones that you might find in Rome or Florence but that is part of its charm. The square outside (also under some construction) is also worth the visit. We explored the Maremma region and even made it up to Volterra. Massa was our favorite.

The exterior of the cathedral is very imposing, with a beautiful facade and high steps leading up to it on two sides. It's very lovely inside as well.

From the outside, you immediately see the influence of the Duomo di Pisa. When you enter, you are surprised by the austerity of the interior compared to the exuberant exterior. Pay particular attention to the capitals atop the columns as they are unique. We arrived as a baptism was taking place. The baptismal font is rather large and has a block of travertine marble, elaborately carved. Many consider the painted The Madonna and Child by Duccio di Buoninsegna the highlight of the cathedral. Personally I preferred the architectural style, but that is a matter of taste. Alas, the baptiam was followed by a mass and we could not wander as we had wished.

Leave the shoulder to shoulder experience of San Gimignano behind and head for what has become my favourite town in Tuscany with gorgeous Duomo to match. Arrive in late afternoon, watch the golden sunlight on the facade and see if you can tear yourself away.

Much of the interest is outside in the carving of the west front and south aisle but inside there is an enormous font and the shrine of St Cerbonius.

Un sogno di monumeto.Monumento alla Fede ma anche alla potenza cittadina.Veniamo coinvolti in un unicum che si framenta in molti particolari, ogniuno dei quali è un opera d'arte autonoma e meravigliosa.Non si può descrivere, si deve visitare.Visto che durante la mia visita erano in corso i restauri della cupola sicuramente una ulteriore gita a lavori completati è d'obbligo

ドウオーモの美観を楽しむならガリバルデイ広場に出る手前の小路がお勧めだ。このすぐ横には小さいながら素敵な「聖母」のフレスコ画がある。当地訪問の目的はドウチョの「恩寵の聖母」にあったが、あいにく教会は修復中で閉鎖され観ることが出来なかった。そのため街の散策に出た。宿の近くのサンタゴスティーノ教会も閉鎖され入り口上部のフレスコ画が眺められただけ。ドウオーモ裏手の民家の壁にはドウオーモ前での説教場面を描いた巨大なフレスコ画があった。市庁舎横の小路を辿ると眺望に恵まれた丘に出る。桜が咲いておりそこからの眺めは楽しめる。またそこに建つセミナリオ内部の薄緑色をしたｽﾃﾝﾄﾞｸﾞﾗｽの斬新さは一見の価値がありお勧めだ。

Una cattedrale che conserva inalterata la sua struttura medievale, riportando il visitatore indietro nella storia. Curiosa e rilevante la posizione leggermente inclinata rispetto la simmetria della piazza antistante e la scalinata, irregolare anch'essa, che conduce all'ingresso. Da non perdere!

Sulle orme di San Cerbone siamo partite da Poggio all'Isola d'Elba dove è morto il Santo. Bel sarcofago, chiesa molto elegante

Massa non è una meta da prima volta in Toscana, a meno che ci si capiti per caso. Ma l'arrivo nella piazza è già la visione della stessa e dell'esterno del Duomo fanno capire che si è capitati bene. Una facciata bellissima ed un clima suggestivo. Merita

Il duomo é un vero capolavoro medievale e impreziosisce in modo armonico la piazza, anche essa straordinariamente bella. La facciata é contemporaneamente austera e raffinata, piena di colonne, portali, loggette e finestre. L'interno é imponente e solenne. Da visitare per apprezzare appieno la bellezza di questo capolavoro.

da visitare! assolutamente! un centro storico, palazzi e vie meravigliosi, Il Duomo imponente, la conosco da tanti anni, ci sono stato in tutte le stagioni, vini fantastici, il mare a pochi chilometri, il luogo delle mie vacanze da bambino, consiglio a tutti di non perdere l'indirizzo. la Cattedrale è un gioiello mistico, romanico pisano e senese si mescolano in armonia senza essere opprimente perchè mantiene una semplicità serena. Non dimenticate una buona bottiglia di Monteregio

We hadden de pech de kerk te bezoeken in de week voorafgaand aan het feest van de patroonheilige: de hele kerk werd van voor tot achter en van onder tot boven schoongemaakt door een legertje locale poetsvrouwen. Dat ging overigens met niet al te veel omzichtigheid ten aanzien van de aanwezige kunstschatten: gewoon rechtstreeks met de stofzuigermond over het marmeren beeldhouwwerk en daarna met ruim water de boel afsoppen... In plaats van tijdens de middagsluiting moest dit zonodig tijdens de bezoektijden van de kerk. Een kleine oude heks die de poetsoperatie leidde sommeerde iedereen weg uit de kerk, terwijl die wel gewoon toegankelijk was. Toen we de derde dag in Massa wéér niet fatsoenlijk rond mochten kijken lieten we ons niet meer zo veel gelegen liggen aan deze kenau en deden dat toch (er was immers niets afgezet en we liepen niemand in de weg), maar rustig van de kunstschatten genieten was er eigenlijk niet meer bij... Buiten zagen we hele tourgroepen teleurgesteld afdruipen, omdat madame ze niet binnen wilde hebben. Zo ga je toch niet met je gasten om?

Tappa obbligata in una visita alla stupenda città di M.M. si raggiunge facilmente dal parcheggio ed è all inizio del giro turistico alla città....con pochi passi dalla cattedrale siete nel vivo dello storico cittadino.
