Spent a wonderful afternoon walking from Riva to the next town along this path. Wonderful views. The water in the lake is so clear. The views are breath taking. Its an easy walk suitable for all ages and well worth it.
Fantastic route along the cliff edge, even for those who may not be very fit. We started the walk late hence could not complete all 7km. The views are breathtaking. Only minus point would be the bicycles going up and down, and some of them are flying down the path. If like us you struggle to find the starting point, park in the Riva del Garda town and walk into the information centre which is right next to the parking area and they will provide you with a map to the starting point.
We left for the walk at 8.15 am in the morning, encountered very little cyclist traffic and got the best sunshine possible. The sun falls on the lake and the mountains and you get brilliant photos. The walk itself provides stunningly beautiful views of the lake and is a must-do while in Riva!!
Perfect for hiking, through lot of old tunnels. But be careful: Old Ponale path is frequently used for cycling too, because it's closed for cars nowadays. Don't miss to explore the olf fortress via the small paths, which leads you up to old bunker and a plateau with cypress tress from where you have an astonishing view to Riva del Garda. My preferred way back from climbing up Cime Sat (1.276m >> Via dell'Amicizia) and Cime Capi (910m >> Via Ferrata Fausto Susatti).Via this old route you can access the picturesque Val di Ledro, up to the Lago di Ledro.
We strolled the path right along Lake Garda every evening after dinner. It is very relaxing and quite convenient to all of the major hotels. It is well lit at night and very safe.
Had a great day with the family cycling from Riva del Garda to Lago di Ledro and back. First half of the ride is along the old coast road which does have significant drops off the side but is wide. Doing it in Oct was great but can imagine that in the height of summer it can be too busy to enjoy properly. A reasonable level of fitness is required to enjoy the ride up
Fully surfaced, gentle gradients, stunning view over lake. Bit busy with mountain bikes on a Sunday leads to lots of possibilities.
Excellent views from this traffic free path. Super for mountain biking or hiking without having to worry about cars or mopeds. Superb views and has a coffee shop along the way.
Had an awesome bikeride to Lago di Ledro lake. It was an 4h mountain trip finished with yummi Aperol Spritz! We took electrobikes, so we could focus on enjoying mountain views. Loved it!
2-3 hour walk each way but well worth it for the views if you don't fancy the uphill on the way there get the local bus from bus station and walk back down
Ok not quite but this is scary!! We hired mountain bikes from our hotel to take up the path. We are experienced Road cyclists, but not mtbs, we are in late 20s and both fit. The path going up was seriously scary. The path is like marbles for the first half, and really narrow with a short fence on some lengths in an effort to stop you falling off the edge! Extra fear factor is other mtbs charging downhill at you. Unfun. Looked a nice walk though if you don't mind sharing path with the bikes.
An easy to moderate in places walk along the old Ponale road which winds along the lakeside clinging to the side of the mountain. From Riva it's mostly a slight incline all the way but of course this reaps benefits when coming back down! There's a cafe bar about half way to Pretasina and the path usually has a fair number of mountain bikers on it too. A really good half day out if the weather is god.
The views are spectacular - but there are a lot of places where a fall from your bike could result in you paying with your life.I am a keen road cyclist and hired a mountain bike at the hotel to try this route. The graident is quite easy but the high speed experienced mountain bikers are very unnerving as they fly back down past you.I think this route should be for experienced mountain bikers only. The relative speeds of slow bikers and hikers compared to the fast bikers to too great and render this a dangerous activity. A solution would be experienced bikers in the morning and hikers in the afternoon.
We really enjoyed this walk despite a damp day. At least the tunnels provided some shelter but the bikes thundering down were a bit scary (usually on the other side of a fence, but not always obvious until they were close up). The views are sensational and the path is well maintained. i wouldn't take a small child or a dog though, some places are not well fenced off which is fine for adults. A newish cafe (June14) has opened up and provided a welcome stop and loo break, it has a very friendly young man in charge of it. We made it to the Madonna statue and turned back, it takes a lot longer than you think because the path is so winding.
As over reviewers have said, this is a fun and beautiful bike ride or hike. We decided to walk onwards from the Ponale Road Path to the Largo valley and lake .....it took a brisk 2 and 3 quarter hours or so. But a beautiful walk and loads of restaurants and cafés at the Largo Lake. And by the time we were walking back down the Ponale Road Path about 16.30 it was almost deserted,so it was much more peaceful.....just local runners and cyclists. So would recommend going early or late to avoid the crowds. Thanks to Trip Adviser for recommending this attraction. We stayed in Malcesine and no where in the tourist information was this attraction mentioned and it is indeed one of the best things we did around Garda.
