The hike is pretty easy and crater is easy reached by anyone without significant handicap. The only qualification is that there are some areas of clay like soil near the top. These can be pretty slippery if it rains (and it did). Even so, it is easily transversed if you are careful. The view is incredible and the crater is a must visit
Despite the constant whinging occurring from the 12 year old on my tail, this was most certainly the best experience of our trip to Sicily. The island is stunning and after a 20 min walk from the port we arrived at Vulcano proper. The walk to the summit was filled with misadventures and chortling via myself twinned with whinging via my 12 year old. My lovely wife was ambivalent to either of us and trudged on in the hope of shopping later on in the trip. The views, breeze and the history swept down the mountain as the lava previously had many years before. It was truly stunning and I heartily recommend this venture to anybody staying on the islands or even on the mainland. The summit and the crater were breathtaking to behold and will be memories that I will cherish far into the future.Tip - Wear proper footwear and take some water and nibbles....ohhh and a camera.....
it's a hard walk to get over there but it's worth! The landscape is stunning and the volcano itself is wonderful. If you aren't properly equipped rent shoes and socks at any of the "car rental": they will be helpful!
This was on our list of things to do on Vulcano and definitely should be on yours if you're visiting the island of Vulcano for a few days.Suggest climbing when the sun is weaker as there's little shade and if you go up between hours of noon and say 5pm you will very well melt - take plenty of water! It's quite a steep but short ascent to the top and the walk around the crater is fascinating.... see the sulphur holes and the crater in the bottom and the stunning views from the top looking down over the islands!
I promised my husband while on the ferry that when we landed on Vulcano we would relax by the pool and then kayak the next day. I didn't know we would be able to scale the volcano and peer into the crater's edge. I giant glass of fresh squeezed orange at the base and some free walking sticks. My shoes were totally inappropriate but I wasn't going to miss out on this opportunity over such minor detail. What a very cool thing to have done and I'm so glad I didn't miss it.
A wonderful afternoon with the right wind, the right light and a view to die for; the entire Aeolian Archipelago in front of you. The colour of the sea, deep blue, the orca of the rugged crater, the yellow of sulphur fumes, everything so beautiful. A great, gorgeous day to remember. The climb of a lifetime.
The island of Volcano is a fascinating place with the combination of bubbling mud pools to coat ones self in for therapeutic purposes then the rinse off in the hot mineral springs that come from the sea bed near by. You can chose the temperature you want by moving closer or away from the spring. The village atmosphere makes the Porto Di Levante a delightful place to visit
This was great fun, we intend to go there again. The view is fantastic and the smoke and sulphur comming from the vulcano set a scary background
Vulcano's main crater is a fun hike that is not overly difficult with no guide needed (Depending on your level of fitness). It is just south of Porto di Levante. The climb has no shade from the sun and is a primarily gravelish trail. There are plenty of places to stop and rest if necessary, but taking water is essential. Certainly a must do if on Vulcano as the views are spectacular!
I love these views, some say I am a romantic. The trip is short and you can make it, go now and smell the sulphur babe.
I am not young or fit but took it easy and went early in the morning. This is a must see if in the area. There is a 10 minute walk from the boat, follow signs - plenty of bars and shops to have a cold drink before you start the climb. Walking boots are essential. So is suncream - no shade from sun. The climb takes one hour to get to the crater, another hour if you walk round the crater (I chose not to but presume it may be worth doing) and then an hour to come down again. This is absolutely worth doing. To look right into such a large active crater is mind blowing. Sulphur smell is bearable. Free of charge and I liked the signs that began 800 metre and counted down. The climb is less distance than it looks so trust the signs rather than looking up thinking you will never get there. Please do this, it is extremely special.
It's one of the points on the list "Must see in your life" :) Great breathtaking place. Landscapes straight from the Moon ;) it takes only about an hour to reach the crater. You have to see it!
Vulcano Island's main crater , no guide necessary unlike Stromboli. It lies south of Porto di Levante and there's a supermarket on the way to stock up on water and snacks for the hike. It's a total of 2k from port to crater rim. Toughish climb, no shade from sun . Hike the rim anti clockwise as it's downhill to avoid inhaling the sulphurous fumes any longer than necessary. There's a clear path that goes slightly below the rim that crosses through a few steamy blowholes ( have a handkerchief ready over mouth and nose to avoid inhaling the acrid fumes. There are warning signs before the hike that warns about getting too close to the steaming blowholes, however, having assessed the risks and benefits I did so - and will not regret the decision. It's safe and path is fairly solid ( wear sturdy boots for the hike anyway ).Worth the hard hike!
Eolian Islands trip will not be complete without a climb of Vulcano. The attractions is free of charge and takes around an hour and a half upwards, an hour wondering around at the top and the same on the way down. Bring water and a camera :-) No food at the top, but a small shack with orange juice after around 200m. BRING GOOD SHOES as the gravel might be slippery, though the walk itself is quite easy (while steep).Views are amazing, the vulcano is a fascinating sight - with smoke still coming through. Don't worry to get close, it doesn't burn.
Ones must visit this place. The hill is not tall but somewhat sleep. Remember to bring your hiring boots. It takes around one hour to reach the crater. Ones can enjoy spectacular views over Vulcano and Lipari. This place can be included in your day-trip from Lipari.
