Walking down this part of town, I felt sooo sorry I am not a better photographer. It's absolutely breathtaking, the facades of the buildings are extremely elaborate - you simply don't know where to look. I think you can easily spend hours just walking down the streets. An added bonus is Sienna Ar Cafe which is across the street from the Law School (blue building), as well as the Art Deco shop which carries memorabilia replicas, jewelry, clothing etc from the period (across from the Art Nouveau museum). The latter is a bit of a bust, by the way. The rest of then buildings are amazing. I walked up and down several times a day and could not get enough of it!
Within its promotional activities of the Art Nouveau heritage of Europe the Art Nouveau Centre of Riga is offering the opportunity to have an insight into the Dutch Art Nouveau style. The exhibition has been organized in co-operation with the Dutch art historian and collector Frederick Erenc. This is a unique opportunity for the inhabitants and guests of Riga to discover the uniqueness of the Dutch Art Nouveau as the wonderful items exhibited – books, china, furniture and pieces of art, represent the features characteristic for the period such as the rationalist school, decorative Art Nouveau, Asian influence and other trends
I've just enjoy walking between art deco so if you like it, this is the place to be. Take a good camera and you will have a good collection of building pictures in this area.
There are not so many chances to experience the art nouveau style in home decorations. Here everything is original, even the kitchen and the bathroom.a must for Jugend style lovers. There is also a nice Art Nouveau boutique across the street, reasonably priced.
Riga is rightly famed for the number and quality of the art nouveau buildings - but the numbers are breathtaking when you get there! Not all in perfect condition, but many are being lovingly repaired. Just walking and wandering and looking was one of the highlights of our holiday
This neighborhood has one of the most fantastic Art Nouveau buidings in the world! The entire Alberta iela and Elisabeta Iela have one building next to the other in this great architechtonical style. A nd the buildings are very well preserved.
This is one of the few cities that own so many building from this time of history (about 800) and to some of them you can even look from other buildings roof top! It's breathtaking
In fact, the part of Riga which is called "he center" by locals is full of nice buildings representing Art Nouveau and Jugend Style.
The Art Nouveau style is most prevalent in this area. I used my guidebook which listed which streets to see and we were not disappointed. Some of the streets it listed were Alberta iela, Strelnieku iela, Elizabetes iela, Teatra iela, Skunu iela, and Smilsu iela. We had a great time walking up and down the streets looking at all the Jugend style buildings. The neighborhoods are nice and quiet and there are some small shops and bakeries on some of the streets. GREAT photo ops !!!!!
I only went down Albert Street, but what a treat! Nearly every building was in this style, so you had to walk down one side & then the other, lest you miss a gem.
When visiting Riga, please walk over one of the bridges to the Jugend Style area. Here are fewer tourists than in the Old City and several streets with great architecture everywhere.
A number of streets close to the old Centre, densely built-up with the houses from the beginning of XX century all in the art nouveau (Jugendstill) style. Most of them already restored and/or currently undergoing works. Lots of fabulous details, colors and shapes make impression. Particularly the projects of Mikhail Eisenstein (father of the famous film director Sergei Eisenstein) are worth attention. Especially the Elisabete and Alberta iela (streets) are worth seeing.
Comming from vienna Jugendstil is something I do know a bit. But the way that these houses are kept is unique. A must see if you come to Riga
Is wonderful area, everyone must go there, must see the style of Jugendstyle in Riga city ,is only located at one famous area in the very centre and has nice and really good restaraunts or bars around it
I have this nice possibility to walk along these beautiful houses every day and I adore them every day even more, so if you want to avoid tourist crowds in Old Riga, Riga's "quite center" is a place for you. Fulfilled with cozy cafes this is a district for slow walk with your heads up to enjoy all the Art Nouveau Riga has to offer. My favorites are Elizabetes street from Eksporta street until Pulkveža Brieža street, Strēlnieku street and Alberta street.
