We visited here on a Princess cruise. The sail up the fjord to Geiranger is magnificent. The town at the head of the fjord is most interesting. A trip out of town into the hills surrounding Geiranger provides breathtaking views.
We cruised the Fjord disembarking at Hellesylt and spending the day touring through beautiful valleys framed with snow capped peaks and glacial waterfalls. The view from Mount Dalsnibba was absolutely magical and we could see our ship at the head of the Fjord below awaiting our return. A very memorable day in stunning surroundings.
What a fantastic place! We sailed in here on the P+O Liner Oriana as part of a 14 day cruise. This place is a must, you must take a coach tour to the top of Mt Dalsnibba and find yourself 1500 metres above sea level looking down on the clouds or on a fine day the views are incredible. There are about 23 hairpin bends on the road so take the opportunity to get some great photos.
We have visited Geirangerfjord on Hurtigruten this summer. It was truly the most beautiful sailing! Unpredictable distances, weather changes, calmness all around...Spent all day on ship enjoying every minute of this voyage. I think Hurtigruten is the most beautiful and comfortable way to get to Geiranger.
We spent 2 days in Geiranger on our Norway fjord tour. It is definitively a must see and no wonder the area is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Truly stunning views from all angles. The ferry trip to Hellesylt seems to be a very good way to discover it. But there are also some very cool view points to discover. There is one on the Geiranger - Trollstigen National Tourist Route at the uppermost hairpin bend of the Ørnevegen road, exiting the Geiranger fjord area to the north. It is a good stop on your drive in or out of the area. But if you want to avoid the crowd and eager to hike a bit, take the fairly easy hike from the Vesteras farm and restaurant to either Vesterasfjellet or Losta. Small path climbing a bit, not difficult as such but need good shoes and 2hrs back and forth.
The 1 hour ferry trip from Geiranger to Hellesylt is really nice. The fjord is spectacular, with lots of waterfalls and steep mountain walls.
We cruised into the settlement of Geiranger at the head of the fjord. The scenery was spectacular with rugged peaks on either side and many waterfalls. The two most famous are The Seven Sisters and on the opposite side of the fjord, The Suitor. Our captain "pirouetted" the ship so everyone had a wonderful view of both and ample opportunity to take lots of photos. It was interesting to see the Knivsfla farm on a tiny plateau about 250 metres above the fjord near The Seven Sisters. Just prior to our stop, an on-board enrichment speaker had given a fascinating talk on the "fjord people" who had inhabited this, and other tiny farms, high above the water. The village itself was busy with tourists as there were three cruise ships in port. The facilities were adequate and included free wi-fi at the tourist information office at waters edge.We took a local bus tour to two viewpoints high above the fjord. Both provided magnificent views. This proved to be very good value for the money and about right duration (about ninety minutes) for the few hours we actually spent anchored. It's easy to see why Geiranger is considered to be one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway!
As part of a 14 day cruise we visited this magnificent fjord, it's spectacular scenery is amazing. Steep sides of the mountains, waterfalls cascading down. A sunny day did justice to this beautiful place. We used the local hop on hop off bus, free WiFi too! An excellent driver around the windy road, 4 cruise ships in made for a very busy town. Almost a traffic jam on the road. Norway is a most beautiful country, very friendly people and informative guides made each town we visited interesting.
This was a great stop on our recent Royal Caribbean cruise. There are lots of hiking, walking and great sites to see. We took the stairway from the base of the main waterfall to the fjord welcome centre. It's a good walk but worth the effort. The views from the fjord centre were fantastic. We also visited the little church for a folk music concert and were pleasantly surprised by the effort of the two performers. It was charming and worth the $15 euro for the 30 minute performance.
We visited this spectacular fjord on a recent cruise. It was our first visit to the fjords and what an introduction. After admiring the steep sides as we cruised to Geiranger we were then tendered into this beautiful village. We then took a tour of the surrounding view points and were impressed withe beauty of the vistas. When we got to the top of the mountain behind the village the snow was piled as highas the bus A memorable visit.
See as much of the fjords along the Norway coast as you can; they are all beautiful, replete with multiple waterfalls, hidden farms, the occasional glacier view, boats of every size, and green everywhere.
The ferry ride into and the bus ride out of the fjord are the major highlights. The seven sisters waterfall is simple breathtaking, even on a cloudy day. The bus stops on one of the mountain slopes for some photo ops, where you get an bird's-eye view of the fjord and the waterfall.I would highly recommend taking the bus out of the fjord as there is plenty of other stunning scenery along the way you wouldn't get to see if you were to take the ferry alone. There is no time to climb up the mountain top within a day. If you really want to do that, just stay overnight in the fjord. But make sure you check that the weather is clear because it puzzles me how English weather has worse reputation. Just note that there is nothing much in the village - only a couple of souvenir shops, a couple of small hotels and a few holiday homes. That said, it is definitely a must-visit in Norway.
The grandest fjord in Norway. A UNESCO World Heritage Site- one of the smallest but definitely larger- than- life, in- your- face, God- must- be- on- a- generous- mood when He created the Geirangerfjord. The most dramatic fjord for its beauty and scenery! Trollstigen grand entrance, very nice accommodations and safari packages, great food, friendly locals, Seven Sisters falls, porpoises, name it they have it there! Perfect for honeymoon too, I must say!
Here's a guide for fellow cruisers who want a good hiking experience starting from this port without having to pay the high tour prices through the cruise line. I researched and couldn't find sufficient information pre-cruise and had to wing it, but I think others out there might want to know if it's possible. It is, and here's how. You'll need a good pair of walking shoes, a light waterproof jacket and approx 5-6 hours of time. Start as early as possible and after a hearty breakfast. (1) Following the road uphill from the port and stay on the left side of the road (hillside). (2) Look for and take the shorcut dirt path leading up to the little gray and beige octagonal church. (3) Go around the cemetery and follow the road again leading up to the big Geiranger Hotel. (4) Walk pass the hotel and just pass the Fjordcenter, you'll see another dirt path and a wooden hiker's signpost with destinations and distance posted. "Vesteras gard" (the halfway point to Storseterfossen) is about 2 km or 1.5 miles. From the signpost, the waterfall is about 2.75 miles. The hike to Vesteras gard is pretty manageable but gets a bit more challenging from Vestera gard to the falls. You will have to scale rocks and be able to go through some slipperly slopes, but ITS TOTALLY WORTH IT. I'm not a great hiker and about 51 years old, but I was able to handle the hike there and back in approx 5 hours. Bring a picnic lunch to eat at the top. Great view and just beautiful. Best of luck!
Nothing can compare to the views of Geiranger Fjord. Views from the cruise ship as it pulls in and views from the roads high above the fjord will take your breath away. It was, far and away, the highlight of of 10 day cruise of the Norwegian fjords. Flan was also great but Geiranger was mind boggling. The bus tours cost extra but they are well worth the price, even at Norwegian prices.
