My girlfriend and I thought we would check this out on our last full day in Kosice. As a note, if you are thinking of coming here, you have to go via the ticket office. Just turn around from facing the door 180 degrees and look left. You will see an arched wall type structure which if you go through, you will find the ticket office. Anyway, we did this, and a very helpful lady came and took as through to the museum and gave us a DVD to watch as a starting point. It was in English, and very interesting to watch. We were then told about the layout of the prison and were allowed to roam at our own free will which was perfect. We hired audio guides as unfortunately in the prison, the text is not in English but the audio guide is just as good if not better in our view. Really worth a look, especially in the basement area where you can get a real feel for atmosphere. As a side point, if the lady who was showing us around was the subject of an earlier review from an English lady who was complaining about her, then, in my view, I could not imagine she was as the English lady described. If you are going take children to these places then ensure they do behave. If they are left to run around, then things can get damaged and that would be a shame for the rest of us so I back entirely what was said to the visitor on this occasion. I cannot imagine she was rude on anyway.
We went there on the Free Museums Day and we liked it a lot. There is much to see but don´t expect too much. They even play a short film for you and let you stand there and watch by yourselves, which I consider unprofessional. Some parts of buildings and some exhibits are worn out and would need renovating/repainting but overall it is worth visiting.
It´s a very interesting place to visit with a lot of history to tell, but it´s rather dull for it´s not interactive and kids were bored.
Because my name has been brought up in this last comment of an english lady, who was a visitor at our museum I would like to clarify what happened because I just cannot sit here reading this without defending myself. My name is Maria (Majka) and I am a guide in the Mikluš prison in Košice city Slovakia. When the lady came in with her family they seemed normal, kind visitors, they paid for their ticket and I took them to the exhibit they wanted to see. I left them there because a group of tourists came to the same exhibit and it is my duty to give a group of people (10 people or more) a full tour in the museum. When I came upstairs with the group everything seemed fine, I started my speech and I heard the children of the english lady running around so I apologized to the group asking them for just one moment and I came up to the children and quietly asked them to please stop running around because I have to give a tour. Then I went to find the mother to tell her to PLEASE watch the children so they dont run in the museum and dont touch anything. I smiled at her cause thats what I do and said thank you she smiled back and nodded. It is my duty to correct children and even adults to not touch and to be careful. After a while the family left. When I finished the tour with the group I came down to our pay desk and my co-workers told me they had a small situation with the english lady and her family while I was still upstairs with the group. She yelled at them that I was rude, she wanted to know my name and she demanded her money back. SHE ATTACKED MY CO-WORKERS WHO HAD NOTHING IN THE WORLD TO DO WITH THE SITUATION!!! I just couldnt understand why she wasnt saying anything to my face, if you have a problem with me or my behavior, please come to me, you need to tell me, not attack my co-workers who werent there. The family could without any problems stay inside the museum continue looking around even if I had a group, and ofcourse they were loud, it was a group of 40 people. So the lady commenting that I threw them out of the exhibit because the group came is a complete LIE!!! I would never allow myself something like that, 95% of our visitors absolutely love the prison museum, the memorial house of Francis Rakoczi II. and our other exhibits, they are very satisfied, they like me and my co-workers and then there is ofcourse that 5%, a group of negative people who will complain even if they have nothing to complain about. We absolutely dont descriminate anyone, so for this lady commenting first of all LIES and second trying to destroy our reputation is rude, absurd and I dont quite understand why she feels the need to do this. Im looking forward to going to work tomorrow, possibly meeting interesting, POSITIVE new visitors even if only for a few moments and please come to our exhibits, they are absolutely worth it, YOURS SINCERELY Maria (museum guide)
Don't waste your time or money. This is the WORST staffed museum I've ever been to because of the staff---and I'm spending two months in Europe on a museum tour in 13 countries; we've been to a lot of museums. The museum has an interactive area with a magnetic puzzle for children to take apart and put back together. I sat down with my daughter and quietly completed the puzzle with her, then we entered another area and a woman named Mijka (Mika?) brought in a very noisy large group of people and told us to stop touching anything. The only thing we touched was the puzzle that was obviously for children to touch. I had to read aloud what English there was louder because the crowd was noisy and rude; they were physically pushing us around and out of the exhibit! A woman hit me with her hand bag! My children are young, my daughter can't read yet, so I was telling her about the exhibit. Then Mijka began speaking to the group in Slovic. I was reading what English was available, and Mijka began yelling at my children to be quiet! We had to leave the exhibit---and I PAID for our tickets! We went into the other room and she stopped speaking to the group, followed us and yelled at my son, who was standing quietly and not speaking at all, and told him to be quiet and not touch anything. He was so upset that she yelled at him. Then she yelled at me to watch my children and have them stop running and touching things---they weren't running OR touching anything. HER group was horribly noisy and distracting. I told the front desk what happened, and I was told that they were "an important group of people for the museum". If they had a private group tour planned, then they shouldn't have sold us tickets. They certainly shouldn't have treated my family that way. And, they should have given us our money back. Also, the sign written in English pointing to the ticket office was pointing the opposite direction, and the bathroom signs pointed to water closets that were locked. What an awful operation. English speakers are discriminated against.
My wife and I had a chance to tour the museum. Thankfully English explanations were available via a listening device. Provides a good review not just of the prison but also of some of the local town history. Takes an hour or so. Certainly provides a good sense of the role that the prison played in the historic community.
This is one of the most authentic ways to learn about the history of the town, and history in general. The exhibits talk not only about the city of Kosice and its history, but also present life in those days, a very interesting look at an old prison and prison life, with a torture room exhibit and excerpts of old sentences which are most interesting to read. There are guides available, you should not only ask for an English visit, but ask for an actual guide to go through the building with you. Otherwise there are audio guides in several languages, English being one of them. After the visit, check out some of the local restaurants which you can easily find nearby and get some halusky!
This musem has a special atmosphere, nice tools and stuff... but all is only in Slovakian. You can reconstruct from the objects, but come on, the European cultural capital for 2013 could have provided some translations...
This is well worth the visit. There are two separate parts of the building to view.In the first was a very informative, short film showing how the building evolved throughout the years. The executioners house and the torture cell are there and there are many informative boards and interesting displays. The second building tells of weaponry and the lives of those who were significant figures in the history of the building. It`s well laid out and held our attention for some time.
We visited the Miklus Prison in may, unfortunately the interesting part of it - Rodosto house - was closed. Maybe they open it from middle June.
Great museum. The museum is located near main street. There is also reastaurant Excalibur. Located near the museum.
Veľmi pekná výstava predmetov ako aj 3D ukážka ako vyzerala v minulosti táto väznica. Personal bol milí a ochotne odpovedal na otázky.
