What great old church steeped in local history . The inside of this church make you feel very close to God. The frescoes are rearly butetifull . From the outside ramparts you a breath taking view of the mtskheta church below, the river and valley. Georgia is truly blessed with great historical monestaries. Good weather is required to enjoy this historical area. March is a very changeable for weather. It a 6 km from Tbilisi and requires a car- taxi or local bus to get there but well worth the effort.

Jvari Monastery is outstanding monument of Georgian architecture. It is positioned on the top of the rocky slope above Mtkvari and Aragvi rivers. Under it one can see the town of Mtskheta, which used to be the capital of the Kingdom of Iberia. In the interior one can really feel the history of the place.

We visited Jvari around noon on a windy, rainy day in mid November. We were staying in Tbilisi and had already been in Armenia and visited a lot of churches/monastries on the same trip so my husband was a bit hesitant to go on another long excursion to visit yet "another" church. Still, we grabbed a taxi earlier that day and agreed with him to drive us to Mtskheta and hop by the church on the top of the hill. I must mention though, that it was totally worth it! The most beautiful aspect about this church is primarily its location. It crowns the steep hill and offers panoramic views onlooking the Mtskheta brick rooftops and river crossings. It is so secluded and nostalgic you feel like you went on a trip to another world! If you're visiting in winter, I advise multi-layering and grabbing a wool cap or scarf as the wind could get extremely cold at times. Definitely recommended!

There is a beautiful view on Mtskheta. It situated close to Tbilisi so there often crowded especially on weekends. One Cons is to reach it you must take a taxi or a tour. But there is Tip for people who loves extremly economy-saving geeks: take a bus No11 and go to it's last stop in Zahesi district. its terminus is at the begining of road to jvari monastry which is about 5 kilometres. More detailed info about bus route and walking distance you can find on google maps.

This is the lone church on top of the hill. It can easily be seen from Svetitskhoveli Cathedral on the other side of the river in Mtskheta. Its very small but has spectacular views of Mtskheta. You CANNOT wear shorts there. I saw the signs there and went in the back of the church and put on pants.

Jvary is the most beautiful monastery in Georgia! I am a history fan so I liked all monasteries but to tell the truth after some time I could not make any difference as all look very similar. Except Jvary which is one of the oldest ones from the age of beginning of christianity. So if you want to see something new you definitely have to go there. Right from the start the location is breathtaking. You wander in the mountains when you can catch sight of this beauty on the top of one. It is an unbelievable sight. A very romantic landscape with hills and forests and a huge byzantine style monastery on the top! Wow!! When you go up you can have a breathtaking view on Mtskheta and its river. The inside of it is very old with a lot of old remains. I was amazed. Everyone in Georgia should see this monastery.

It is a beautiful and historically important place with an incredible view on Mtskheta city and the Saguramos mountains. We took a taxi (we negociated the fare before for a round trip Tbilisi -Mccheta-UplistsikheTbilisi) from Tbilisi to get there and the travel lasted less than 1 hour.I also recommend to see the Mccheta church in the city. Very nice. An old lady told us a lot of interesting facts and stories about the place, the city and georgian traditions. Lovely experience !

I have been in Georgia more than six years. I have been visiting this site countless amount of times. Mostly with friends who visit Georgia for the first time but also I love to go there often alone. Especially beautiful is winter when plenty of first now covers mountain. Beautiful views and tranquility makes it great place to go and get rid of everyday stress. Place gets busy on weekends with loud wedding corteges running up and down road to Jvari, so take care when driving.

Simple, beautiful, historic, with amazing views of Mtskheta and the rivers below - this is worth a visit. Women will need to cover their heads, so bring a scarf.

On the way to Mtskheta, it's quite a "must" to drive up the hill to visit this place- for the view and the histoty.

This is not a large or ornate church, but it is very attractive in a strong, simple way. We went on a Sunday and there were many couples getting married there. It was fun to see some of the ceremony. The ladies get extra points for climbing the hill in their fashionable high heels. There are lovely views out over the river valley as well.

If you're coming to Mtskheta by marshrutka from Tbilisi, you'll need to hire a cab to go to Jvari Church/Monastery (that's perched on a mountain). The monastery complex is rather small and was once fortified. You will actually see a few of the stone walls' remains today. The church itself is simple but beautiful. Its age (it was built in the 6th century) may not be obvious from the outside, but when you get in, you will get an idea of how old it is.Women must cover their heads upon entering. There were scarves available for visitors to quickly borrow when we visited.View of Mtskheta town and the two rivers from Jvari is amazing! Really, a must-visit.Half an hour is prolly enough. No fee to pay.Got heaps of photos here: http://www.pinaytraveljunkie.com/photo-essay-mtskheta-georgia/

If you're going to the town, you need to head up the hill, 15 lari (tourist) for a round trip in taxi. Great to get a lay of the land.

Mtskheta is the second oldest town in Georgia and Jvari Monastery is old too, it's on UNESCO world heritage list, lies on the high hill that is looking on the town.
