Worth the effort. A museum that has a lot to offer in a great park and building. The brut art I challenges our pre-conceptions about the medium.

It was quite a way out of the city and I made a mistake by getting a taxi there as a solo traveller (over £30 ). The hotel had told me that it was a little way out of the city centre, and I should have heeded their advice and got the Metro and bus. The museum itself is set in expansive grounds and there were some great sculptures in this park area. From outside the main building seemed a little bland, but once you were inside the museum, the layout worked really well, and the glimpses of the outside statues through many of the windows brought the parkland into the setting.I enjoyed my visit, and one of the Jean Miro paintings was the highlight for me.On my return to Lille, I took the hotels advice and traveeled by bus, and then Metro. It was simple, and the locals were ever so helpful and friendly. The cost was also amazing.......well under £2.

I wanted to go here for years and was not disappointed!I came by car and I do think to find it you need a navigation system since it is quite away from Lille.Beautifull building existing of two fused parts in small but nice sculpture garden. Spend 15 minutes extra to walk the garden.Sundayafternoon it is not very busy.Apart from the permanent collection not that big but with very nice pieces, there was the very interesting art brut wing and temporary exhibition nicely fitting to the art brut.Very educating and inspiring museum about the classical acclaimed art and the other art like streetart, primitive and prehistoric art, automatic art and personal expressions by psychiatric patients for example. It ´s one continuum of mankinds expression! At lunchtǐe all the visitors squeezed themselves in the small restaurant leaving the museum empty..,

The Museum of Modern Art on the outskirts of Lille requires a bit of an effort to get to but is well worth the effort. The works of Modigliani, Braque and Picasso alone make a visit worthwhile.

The Art museum is one of the best reasons to visit Lille. It was an excellent collection of modern painters as well as Art Brut. The outdoor is beautiful with some good pieces of well-known artists. The interior of the museum is great, well lighted, and spacious, the building in my opinion is a work of art.

A wonderful collection. Well presented. With sculptures sited in the gardens and in the galleries. Interesting building. An excellent restaurant.

LAM locates in the suburbs east of Lille, accessible by car, but also easily by Metro /bus from Lille centre. The sensible acronymic name is a distillation of „Lille Métropole, musée d’art moderne, d’art contemporaine et d’art brut”. As this implies there are three distinct displays: modern art (to the early post war), contemporary art (ie loosely post 1980) and what they call Art Brut, a French term for a very diverse collection of „non-mainstream“ or non-academic art. Some important outdoor sculpture makes a 4th topic. The modern art collection is small and narrow, but powerful, thus is strong on Modigliani, also Braque and Picasso, and including some French modern artists. Well worth it. The other two sections will not be everyone’s cup of tea, but will likely include something appealing or arresting to just about anyone interested in art. The works locate in sprawling generally unremarkable buildings fronting gardens /park harboring some provocative modern sculptures. The overall package makes LAM a very appealing tourist destinantion: some quality art works, plenty of stimulating works, and all in a relaxed spacious setting, also including a good cafe. Finally, on right now (till 11 November) is a small but marvellous show on some illustrated journals around the start of the First World War, satirising Cubism.

We visited here on a rainy afternoon with our sons, 3 & 6. The outside was really pretty, even in the rain but have to say that the inside was a bit disappointing. Perhaps we are spoilt as our nearest modern art gallery is the Tate Modern and we expected too much! However the entry cost was very reasonable and it was a lovely afternoon escape from the rain.

Very nice museum, we enjoyed it. The parking is dangerous, our car's window was smashed and broken, even if the car was clean and had no valuables in It. There is no surveillance, no security staff and no police.

Getting there was quite a challenge on a Sunday Morning. Took the metro then a bus then fortunately say the signs on the pavement to tell us where to got. Through a bit of a housing street then eventually, more by luck than judgement, found it. Lovely outdoor area, with some interesting outdoor sculptures, and some lovely planting supporting them. Inside, it was dead. I think we were the only people in there for the first hour. Got slightly livelier as the morning progressed. The exhibitions were not all necessarily to my taste but I found it a wonderful space with some very attractive pieces. The Art Brut new exhibition area is stunning and the work of Augustin Lesage absolutely gorgeous. I could have stayed there all day. A quick visit to the shop (everything I liked was too expensive) and the cafe- fine for the drink and baguettes we had - and then back to the bus stop! I would say a definite to visit if you have the time (at least half a day, better with more)'

This is a wonderful collection, by turns, moving, challenging and provoking. The sculptures in the park are imposing not least Picasso's woman with outstretched arms.Inside the galleries are open, well lit and representative not only of French Artists but othe European Artists too.The Art Brut collection is especially impressive with work drawn from many artists who did not show professionally but developed their work privately. The restaurant is excellent and lunch was a work of art perfectly prepared and presented.

Beautifully laid out, in lovely grounds and superb collection of modern art including several Picassos.

Set in a lovely sculpture garden, the museum has some excellent contemporary and modern art, as well as a really fun wing filled with "Art Brut" (Outsider Art for English speakers). Big enough to be worth the trip out from town, small enough to avoid gallery fatigue.

Having heard so much about the LAM and seeing the beautiful white nest like exterior from internet photographs it promised so much but delivered so little. Upon arrival, we were confronted with a brick, gloomy building! Where was the white exterior? Surely it should be at the entrance….you would think so! But still we entered hoping to see some great art. Some beautiful Modigliani's greeted us in the first room, we ventured further….Picasso, Braque, Leger, all great artists to be assured but in every room the overall uniting theme seemed to be grey. It's as if the LAM were given all the artworks the other museums didn't want, but they took them anyway because they were well known names that draw visitors. The contemporary collection was more promising with wonderful pieces by Annette Messager and the highlight of our visit Daniel Buren. He has constructed a wonderful installation: 'Les trois cabanes éclatées en une' which is beautiful. Then we visited the famed Outsider section which was presented coldly; the artworks felt out of place in the formality of a museum such as this, if you compare it to the warmth of La Fabuloserie, which was a great shame and paid them a disservice. Then we were going to visit the shop but were rudely informed that it was closing in the afternoon. I have never before been so disappointed by a visit to a museum, no wonder it was so empty!
