Medieval city is unique, historic, quiet, but with lots to do, very nice French bars and restauants.

For me the real highlight of a trip to Carcassonne is the view of the medieval city from a reasonable distance with the snow capped Pyrenees as a backdrop-you really get the impression of having gone back several centuries. It is a bit less atmospheric when you arrive as it is a huge tourist attraction and as such fairly crowded. To cater for these crowds there is a big selection of restaurants, to suit all budgets, and the usual touristy shops if you like that sort of thing. It is fun to walk around the ramparts and narrow streets soaking up the atmosphere despite the crowds. You can pay extra to access the higher areas of the ramparts, we didn't. Parking is very close by and only 5 euros for up to 6 hours. Carcassonne is, without doubt, worth a visit.

I visited the city for a few days last month, and thoroughly enjoyed it. I travelled there by train from Montauban where I had been visiting friends. Took train from here to Toulouse, then caught another from there to Carcassonne. Nice short journey. Trains very prompt and clean. Carcassonne train station is beautifully situated, overlooking the Canal du Midi and is very close to hotels, bars, restaurant and shops. The Mediaeval City is about a 30 minute walk from here, however there are buses every 15 minutes up until 7pm. Possibly later in Summer. I took a bus costing 1 euro as it was a bit chilly and wasn't really sure where to go. Met a nice Australia couple on bus who turned out to be actors. The husband Reg was in The Sullivan's and his wife Judith was a Classical theatre actress. Very nice people.Ten minutes later we were outside the walls of the old city. I walked around the village inside the walls before doing the tour of the fortress, which was quiet and peaceful as not many tourists there. There are lovely houses lived in by locals, as well as churches, museums, workshops, small hotels and shops. Plenty of nice buildings to look at whilst ambling through the small narrow streets. I met up with my new friends for lunch in a small family run bistro where the food was cheap and tasty: local black pudding with apple, turkey dishes and merguez and couscous. After lunch I did the tour of the fortress and was the only one booked on it. My guide Monika, from Germany, was fabulous. Very lively, animated lady who was passionate and very knowledgeable about the history of the place. She told me things that she'd forgotten to tell my friends on the morning tour and asked me to pass the info on as she knew I was meeting them again later! This lady knows her stuff. Best guided tour I've ever been on! And very reasonably priced considering it's a World Heritage site. The fortress is magnificent and very well cared for and preserved - there were stonemasons repairing part of the main entrance when we arrived. This tour is a must for serious lovers of history. And the views from the ramparts over to the Spanish border are magnificent! After the tour we had coffee and crepes in a small local bar. Again reasonably priced, although I suspect this may not be the case in the higher season. All in all, this was a place worth visiting, for the history, ambience, people and beauty. And it is even more beautiful to look at when it is lit up at night! Très belle!

Unfortunately we experienced much rain during our visit to Carcassonne. Even so, we enjoyed seeing the Chateau Comtal and the cathedral. Walking along the rampart walls would have been lovely in good weather - as it was we just hurried along to avoid getting too wet.

Another place which was rebuilt and repaired by the famous architect VIOLET LE DUC,who repared a lot of castle in FRANCE at the order of NAPOLEON III.The city is one of the most pitoresque place in the FRANCE,The old city surrounded with ramparts has the same atmosphere like the streets of MOUNT SAINT MICHEL.There is an eglise here,Saint NAZAIRE,also here is preserved one of the oldest school in FRANCE.The new town has even a museums and as a hilarious story a mayor of CARCASSONNE was walking on the streets and he notice that the strrets are very filty. In order to keep the city clean he invented pubelle. It was named after hist name.It is believed that the meridian from eglise de SAINT SULPICE and eglise de SAINT VICENT de CARCASSONE has given the unit of measurment-METER.We were here in august 2008.

This is an amazing city! It is an medieval double walled city within a modern city. We toured the count's castle within the city and toured the church. There are lots of shops and OK restaurants to choose from. Yes, there were lots of tour groups on a Saturday morning, but it was not a real problem. If someone has mobility concerns it could pose a serious problem since there are so many steps in climb up and down within the count's castle and up to the ramparts. The city, however is manageable for someone who uses a cane. The views of the Aude river valley are simply incredible. It was a wonderful day to take our time and just wander around.

I had read so many books about Carcassonne the last one being kate mosse { sepulchre } I sometimes closed my eyes and tried to visualise what it would be like, when I looked it up online it was just as I imagined, but to be there inside the city was just absolutely amazing, would advise anyone who enjoys their history to visit if at all possible.

The most recent reviewer has stated that the 'city' is awesome. Whilst this might be true, do not forget that the 'new' town is also impressive although in an under-stated way. That's because it needs interpretation and that is currently available in the Dominican Chapel, very close to the Office du Tourisme. A free exhibition shows, with clear interpretation panels and diagrams, how the fortified city and bastide city developed. To see the walled city on it's own is to miss the point. Don't forget to read Kate Mosse's Labyrinth before visiting... and I wonder how much of the movie was shot here...
