the high cross

The High Cross is a tenth century sandstone cross that is situated in the centre of Clones. It is made up of two separate crosses (head of one & shaft of another) & has carved images on all sides. It is amongst the remains of a monastery founded in Clones.As it is Christmas time there is currently a nativity stand beside the cross which works well. This attraction is a lovely centrepiece & worth taking a few minutes to view.

The High Cross Belongs to the Ulster Group of Scripture Crosses. It comprises at least two crosses, the shaft dating from the 9th/10th century and the head from a later date. The cross shows scenes from the old and new testament. A must see
