Amazing views esp in winter conditions, hail, sleet and snow but well worth the drive from Westport!
Despite four seasons in a day in March, snow storms, sleet, hale and sunshine we enjoyed our drive around part of the Wild Atlantic Way
Took a drive from Westport through Newport on to Mulranny then took the Alantic Coast road a must do
Unrivaled scenery all around the coast of achill island. Miles of ocean, high cliffs and golden sandy beaches. Stunning views!
Beautiful scenery and lovely beaches. The road signs could be a bit clearer and come up on you fast when driving.
I had no idea this area was so beautiful! The drive was incredible, and there was so much to see! Only keep in mind: watch for sheep around sharp corners!
We drove around first and then decided to walk the loop. Quite unspoilt and breathtaking. Don't just drive it you should walk the loop!
This was well worth taking a day and exploring. The main Atlantic Way was well marked. The landscape is plain and rugged, but at the same time, beautiful. Lovely small villages, amazing rock formations, bog fields, ferns and bracken, huge vistas, and the ever-changing light. Interesting contrast between the old stone buildings and historical ruins, and the new vacation homes. Another striking example of the diversity of the Irish countryside.
A must do trip to Achill island and especially the Atlantic drive. Signposted well enough so you shouldnt get lost and not much chance of a traffic jam!I love the views and the sound of the sea crashing against the coastline..visit often to find little coves and walk a bit...sometimes the best things in life really are free! Enjoy... :-)
The drive to achill island is one of scenic and picturesque views, achill island is is a wonderful experience, sheep meandering across the golf course, the deserted village offering haunting views of years ago, well worth a day trip
I have not been to Achill since childhood. It is barren landscape. The real interest is in the seascapes and the breakers on the rocks. There is little interest in the grubby towns/ settlements. The whole place looks like a kind of Dispersed Suburbia where a wanton extravagant use of land diverted from productive agricultural purposes for building suburban houses strung out all over the countryside as if there was nothing better for it. Some disgracefully untidy like mini waste dumps. Rotting machinery abandoned where they finally broke down. Grotty pubs. Dismal. At times you think that all that goes on in Achill is cutting turf and building houses. The sheep are untended and all over the roads. Many of These houses are straight out of a Markey Robinson painting. But they are newish so they are pastiche. So we have new houses imitating those of the Markey Robinson genre minus the shawlies. The sea views are all that is going here. As at Keem Oh and the chowder at the hotel at the bridge, land side.
This is the most spectacular scenic drive, well worth a day trip, beautiful beaches and cliff views. Wild Atlantic Way at its most beautiful
Apologies to all Italians, but for anyone who enjoyed driving the Amalfi Coast you are in for one wonderful journey when you experience the Atlantic Coast drive around Achill Island. Look for the Atlantic Coast drive signpost after Sweeney's supermarket and you should go as far as Keem Bay /beach.All I say is ENJOY!
Don't bring or hire a car in Ireland because some garages are selling "stretched petrol" which ruins your engine and insurance does NOT cover. Authorities sitting on their hands. Bronach Mor
Nothing to say about it other than its good for the soul to go around this most beautiful part of Ireland.
