Nice cathedral in the Cardiff suburbs, worth a trek out if visiting ecclesiastical places is your thing.
As an ex RN person I was fascinated to see the HMS Llandaf ships bell there and as an ex personnel from the HMS Salisbury felt I was seeing a belated cousin ! Also seeing the Royal Welsh Regiments old battle colours (fan of film Zulu) was amazed what was inside the Cathedral relating to such a formidable British Regiment . Fantastic place to see for anyone interested in History or Religion .
What a spectacular place! The outside architecture is beautiful, as is the setting. Parts of the cathedral date from the 12th century, and they have a Celtic cross that is even older. A wonderful gentleman who volunteers there told us much of the history of the cathedral, including the ancient Celtic cross, and about the painting The Seed of David, a triptych painted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The painting is on the left as you enter. Most stunning, though, is when you walk into the cathedral. From the outside, it's a very traditional Norman cathedral. But once inside, the main aisle has a large archway, on top of which sits a sculpture of Jesus, arms extended, entitled Christ in Majesty. It's very modern compared with the traditional church. At the time it was unveiled, in the 1950s, it was quite controversial. Llandaff Cathedral is definitely a must-see if you are interested in cathedrals and history!
Well worth a visit, an interesting place with the epstein statue which like marmite you will either love or hate. The guides are very helpful.
Cathedrals are some of my favourite places and Llandaff was an enjoyable visit. The Regimental Chapel is very nicely done and a lovely space to reflect in. The atmosphere of the nave was also lovely, pensive and majestic in an understated way - the modern addition is striking and at first I was appalled but on reflection think it is a very effective addition and makes Llandaff a unique and interesting Cathedral well worth a visit.
Quite a worthy visit to Llandaff Cathedral. You may go into the Cathedral to have a visit no matter what religion you belongs to actually. just a short walk down from the car park, you'll see graveyard on your right hand side and there's is a small entrance which the door is close. just push the door to open. After the visit, you may try chinese restaurant at the opposite road of the cathedral. It's called Summer Palace. They serve great and authentic foods.
On entering the scene that confronts you is peaceful and wonderful. A beautiful and different cathedral. Well worth a visit.
The cathedral is absolutely stunning, the architecture is breathtaking and it is such a beautiful place to visit. Llandaff is also a lovely place with little shops and cafes to visit.
A truly impressive, really inspiring and, whatever your religiousbeliefs or lack of them, an undeniably "holy" ancient structure.Inside, the massive statue called 'Christ in Majesty' dominatesthe entire interior and adds gravitas and dignity.
Beautiful cathedral....the inside is stunning and very welcoming but peaceful ....whe I visited the choir were practicing which produced a wonderful atmosphere
It's really worth walking out to Llandaff Cathedral which marries the old and the new so seamlessly. The exterior is very impressive and the interior warm, calm and welcoming. The Lady Chapel is stunning with its beautiful ceiling but the whole building is lovely.
Tucked away in the suburb of Llandaff, this is one impressive cathedral. Although there were Christian structures on the site earlier, the present cathedral dates back to the 12th century -- parts of it, that is. Over the centuries, it has been built onto, rebuilt, damaged in World War II and now stands rebuilt again, rewired and site of the largest wholly-new, British built organ commissioned in a UK cathedral in the last half century. A focal point is a reinforced concrete arch in the center of the church. Sir Jacob Epstein's aluminum statue of Christ in Majesty is affixed to a column atop the arch. Some exterior shots of the cathedral and the cathedral green can be seen is several Dr. Who episodes.
Certainly a cathedral to visit, down in a dip and in a peaceful spot. We love the Epstein statue which dominates the cathedral and the grand organ. Nothing to dislike. Few good shops and a car park in Llandaff, and a nice place to eat.
There was a service in progress when I tried to visit twelve months ago - I think perhaps the school uses the cathedral for morning service. So, at last I got inside yet not with sufficient time to spare... I had a quick look at the Rossetti and Epstein works of art and took in the side chapel dedicated to the Welch Regiment. All very interesting. Now I know what to look for on the next visit...
We have taken many friends to Llandaff Cathedral and always enjoy showing them round.Apart from the magnificent Epstein which takes your breath away as soon as you enter, there is such a beautiful mix of ancient and modern-the Norman door and wonderful Pace chapel to mention just two. We never tire of going.
