Balqhuidder Church is a lovely place. I love to stroll through the cemetery & read the old stones. Be sure to go inside the church while there. Also, if you have time, do a bit of research about the area before you go. Interesting history & it really ads to the experience.
Lovely old church with the grave just laid out simply. great history but quiet and peaceful just as a church yard should be.
Thought we were never getting there as the road went on for miles from the original sign however if you get the weather what an amazing setting.
Nice to see Rob Roy's grave. Set in a lovely old church yard. The family motto says it all (you'll have to go to find out what it is!). Don't ignore the rest of the graveyard, there are some fascinating old lairs and gravestones. My favourite is right up at the back left of the graveyard (facing the front of the church). Climb the grassy slope and you'll find the lady and her owl. Have a look over the wall in the woods and you can find the grave of one of the former ministers. What a lovely spot.
Very hard and stressful drive to get to the location, although the surroundings are peaceful and easy on the eyes. I wouldn't say it was worth the journey for a small sign and a rather unimpressive piece of rock. There wasn't even a cafe!
It's a peaceful setting - but probably not worth the trip really. Interesting information board near to the church helps you to understand the history.
It tells you on the board outside the church that they are not sure if this is Rob Roy's Grave or not but that it is indeed his wife's and one of his sons. It's a nice enough little place to go visit but to be honest don't go out of your way to see it.
Very peaceful, lovely surroundings. Narrow drive up to the church but well worth the drive. Unfortunately the new church was not open, but the atmosphere of the place was so calming and relaxing.
Great sense of history here with a lovely small church. There are two tablets in the church one claims Rob Roy died peacefully in his bed and other, feet away, claims he died after a duel whilst trying to steal someone else's land. He must have been a politician. Also a book with some ancient Gaelic which is very interesting.
We were so glad to spot this sign have the good fortune to see this cemetery. The sun was shining, the air was fresh and all around was green and pastoral. What a setting for a final resting place!
This wasn't very easy to find, that was the only down side, its needs to be advertised more. The grave was kept well in the Church Yard you could still easily read the inscriptions and dates etc. Beautiful scenery and a waterfall in the woods behind the church. There was coins and Tartan bows tied around the railings.I was dissapointed to find The Rob Roy Musuem had closed in 2006 and would like to see this re-opened as its a huge part of history fro the Trossachs area and would be well visited.
Disclaimer: I am not the biggest history buff so there was not much there for me. Unless you are very dear to the story and want to give you respects to the graveside, I did not see a real reason to see it. Also there was a lot of old flowers and trinkets that people had left that, due to the fact that it had rained and was raining, made it look kind of cluttered and messy.
A fascinating trip to see a legend's grave. It is situated in a very isolated spot next to a derelict church, reflecting the peaceful country around.Well worth the trip.
It would be very tempting to make this location into a garish, money-grabbing tourist haunt, yet it is left virtually untouched.A single track road takes you to the small village of Balquhidder, meaning no coach trips to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of this beautiful glen! The church and its graveyard are modest and "un-touristy" so don't expect anything grand or special. There is a simple grave surrounded by a small fence to mark the family plot, the ruins of the original chapel as well as the current church and a notice board by the gate to give background information. There are questions over the exact location of Rob Roy's burial place but this is the family plot and I suppose it depends upon whose propaganda you believe! No shops or refreshments so bring your own. A pleasant little stop off if you are touring the surrounding area.
found this spot to be secluded and quiet. we explored around the church and the graveyard. interesting for history buffs. if you are close take the time to pop in
