Sadly this lovely School of Art burned down not long before the end of term last year- it was devastating but the news is it will be rebuilt as it was.Since you will have to wait sometime to visit the rebuilt Art school, you can still visit House for an Art Lover in Bellahouston park for some fine examples of CRM design.
Unfortunately not open to public after the fire but just over the road is the new building and you can arrange a tour which includes a walk outside the old School of art with very interesting explanations by our guide ( a student of architecture). It was like private tour, just the 2 of us
Well worth the breathless trip up the hill to see the school immortalized in countless photographs that cannot do it justice. Also good to be able to contribute to the restoration from the tragic fire. And view the interesting dynamics of students demonstrating for 24-hour studio access!
It was so interesting and my grandson had an exhibit. Just glad I had visited before the terrible fire at the Art College
Sad that the original building was burned and undergoing repair, but still had a nice time touring the school.
We were just two people early on a Sunday with less than one hour to spare. The lovely art student who offered us the tour tailored it to suit. She knew everything we wanted to find out and added the student perspective. The buildings are so different and beautifully designed and very very interesting. If I ever visit Glasgow again I will return and hope to see the outside without the scaffolding and the inside repaired from the fire.
Lovely to be able to view such a special building. The views are fantastic. The architecture and design are unrivalled. Definitely worth a visit.
We had a guided tour which was interesting-some history of the Art School & how C.R.Mackintosh came to design the building, but disappointing lack of information around the fire in the library & the rebuilding. Thought they would at least have some photos of the library before the fire & an update of how works have progressed. The furniture exhibits were good to see ,but they have as much if not more in Kelvingrove. Felt the entrance fee £9.75 was expensive for an hour, just have to think of it as a charitable donation!
On a very rainy and windy Glasgow day, this tour was the highlight of our day. Laura L was an excellent and very knowledgeable tour guide.. Despite the devastating fire which means the original building cannot be seen inside, she presented us with a wealth of information and with a lovely quiet sense of humour. I can't recommend this tour highly enough and we look forward to returning when the old building has been restored. That our fee contributes to the school and especially now the restoration made us very glad to make a very small contribution to this amazing school.
This is a really great way to spend an hour in Glasgow. The tour involves a short spell outside looking at the exterior of the beautiful McKintosh building. Then inside for a short but interesting tour of the new GSA building which is a beautiful space before moving into the furniture gallery which contains original pieces. Our guide Eve was knowledgeable and enthusiastic and made this a very enjoyable visit. It would have been good to have a better sense of how the new building is being used - maybe a floorplan in the foyer that the guides could reference before taking the tour group upstairs? Highly recommended!
