Some brilliant history. We were wowed by the scale of everything inside, the views up into the roof were amazing.
A great place to visit, and marvel at the wonderful architecture. We lit candles in memory of parents who have left us.
Did a day trip to this historic city. It is expensive to enter the cathedral, however, you can return within a year, which I think is a brilliant idea. The upkeep of historic buildings is expensive and I would prefer to pay a little extra to main this wonderful building. I couldn't stop looking up and around and spent a good hour inside exploring the amazing craftsmanship. My friend's children referred to as a "big house" and it is certainly that!!! Looking forward to returning again for another look around as your bound to find something new and will probably do a tour with one of the friendly guides. There is a good sized café nearby with bathroom facilities and a gift shop.
Staying near Winchester, we had to come and see the cathedral, couldn't have missed such an important historical monument. But the entrance fee was a bit of a shock, as there were 4 of us! The architecture and everything was absolutely brilliant, and the guides were very helpful.
Breathtaking and absolutely lovely sights helped by the weather we walked & walked through this lovely City. From the Cathedral to the Water Mill we enjoyed the lot
Brilliant reason to visit Winchester and see this outstanding cathedral, highlight of the city definitely.
A wonderful buiding to explore and spend time in. When visiting, make sure that you link in with one of the free volunteer guides who have a wealth of information and makes an enjoyable trip to an excellent experience.
Awesome to stand in such a huge ancient nave, knowing the first church was established here in 650!Our US guests were equally impressed ......
You must visit the Cathedral if you're in Winchester. What an amazing building, lots of interesting architectural features which the guides explain as you wander around. The best bit was the Anthony Gormley sculpture in the Crypt. Wow.
This elegant cathedral is full of history, not the least of which is Jane Austen's gravestone which makes no mention of her being an author. But no fear, a brass plaque was added by a nephew mentioning it. This soaring English Gothic cathedral is beautiful to stand in. Whole sections of the transcept are still Norman and there is a small crypt with the original paintings that decorated the place before the cathedral had stained glassl. One of the most impressive things is the huge window at the back of the cathedral which was smashed by Cromwell during his occupation of the town. When he left the townspeople gathered up the shards and they put them all back to make a window. It is completely abstract and looks modern but it's all from the 16th century. Rent the audio tour or take one, it's worth it Winchester is a living cathedral not a museum. If you can stay for evensong it is really transcendentally beautiful. A boys and mens choir fills the space with beautiful music (and you get to sit in the carved choir stalls). Most days at 5:30. There's a charge to tour the cathedral but there is no admission charged for services.
the cathedral are very commercial and charge £7.50 for an adult to visit. It is very interesting but may come as a surprise to some visitors.
we had a very interesting tour round the cathedral and learned a lot about it and the local characters
The entry fee was fair but really should be free to all. This great Cathedral is not the most iconic in Britain but is hugely steeped in history over a 1000 years. The tombs , windows and plaques all give this cathedral a place in history. Our ticket gives us 12 months to return and that we will in December when the 2015 Christmas market takes place.
We stayed in Winchester for 2 days and found the Cathedral to be the main attraction - our hotel room window was a little more than 100 feet away! Walk around and take in the scope of its construction so many years ago, while the inside contains much history, too. Check out the memorials to the wars, medieval knight's tomb and especially that of Jane Austin. So much to see, so plan your trip well.
We went on a rainy Sunday afternoon and listened to the even song service which was beautifuylly sung by the choir. The Cathedral is easy to find in the City Centre, the stained glass windows are particularly beautiful, well worth a visit
