papplewick pumping station

This place is amazing, not well advertised but a must visit if you are in the area. I wasn't expecting much as it was somewhere my dad has been wanting to visit rather than myself. It's worth visiting when the pumping station is in action, when you walk in the pumping room and see the amazing engineering that took to build it, the room and building is so ornate, simply breathtaking.

This was our second visit, the first being 2-3 years ago. It is a fantastic place - an example of Victorian engineering pride presented superbly well. A little sad that this time the reservoir wasn't open - though to be fair there was snow on the ground and I can understand them being cautious about either using their bus or allowing people to walk what is (or certainly was when we last visited) a touch on the rough side.If anything - and this is the 4 not 5 reason - the volunteers there were a tad over-enthusiastic for our liking. We really wanted just to wander around and read the information, follow the rather good guide and see for ourselves.We'll go again for sure - I desperately want to get down the reservoir and get some good photos of what is another fine example of 'doing it right'. Despite knowing the inside of the reservoir was unlikely to ever be seen by anyone 'important' the attention to detail in the brickwork leaves many a modern home builder standing.

Thank you for your comments but I think you are actually referring to The Lakeside which was also a Pumping Station and is located on the A60. We don't actually have a restaurant at Papplewick Pumping Station just a cafe serving sandwiches, sausage rolls and the like.
