we thought it was a little pricy as it will only take a hour at most to walk around. but it was great to be able to take of your coat and leave your shopping in a locker before you walk around.
My first impression was that the entrance fee of €9.50 was expensive for such a small museum. The building itself is beautiful, particularly the central staircase. My review is based on the museum, not the cafe which looked wonderful! The exhibition spaces were quite small, the first space gives an overview of the history of bags. The Chanel space was a little underwhelming, with some bags missing from the displays. My favourite part was the 1950s/1960s bags - in colourful and novelty styles. Less successful was the exhibition of 1960s/70s style bags, most of them were pretty unremarkable, or were contemporary bags 'inspired' by retro styles. A significant amount of the ground floor was dedicated to the shop, selling handbags, it felt like you'd paid to enter a high end bag shop. Not especially a must see when in Amsterdam.
Great collection of handbags through the ages. The museum building is beautiful and the exhibits are well laid out. You can see the whole museum in about an hour. The gift shop is also neat with a great selection of handbags. But the highlight our visit was having High Tea. The tea and finger foods were amazing, the service was great, and the atmosphere is luxurious. Do it!!
Only costs €7 could of spent all day here, fascinating experience. Really well laid out, the owners are clearly passionate about there collection.
my wife thoroughly enjoyed the place as she is a handbag collector and worthy of a visit a lovely place to chill too
Woman who love bad and purse must visit this museum. You will love it. Not only history, but they give you an idea how to be stylish! :-)
Having been to Amsterdam many times, I didn't need to go to lots of tourist places. This was a nice change of pace. Interesting exhibits, not crowded, easy to see things at your own pace, not expensive. A nice stop that offered some unique exhibits.
I've already done the big history museums so I wanted to check out something different. This was so cool! Loved seeing the old purses and learning the history of handbags! Not to mention, the fabulous assortment of great purses a girl could only dream of having!
The location and the building are very nice. You start at the top and work your way down. And all the time you are thinking: would love to add this bag to my home collection ;-) Even for people who are not really interested in bags (....) were surprised about the history and meaning behind 'such a simple things as a bag' (quote coming from a man of course).
Amazing collection of handbags, travel bags and also sundry man bags dating from 17th century up to the present. Some shoes too! Really special attraction over 3 floors and beautifully arranged. Small cafe on ground floor serves delicious food (the taster selection of mini cakes excellent). The newly opened Waldorf Astoria on opposite sideof the canal. This museum is well worth a visit and it is staffed with knowledgeable volunteer guides. My friend and I loved it.
Great for the ladies. I'm not sure it would be of much interest to the men. My partner just stood around looking bored for most of time. bought a great clutch bag in the shop for a good price and I still love it!
Great selection of bags and purses beautifully displayed, with history of the development of this important accessory! Really enjoyed the Chanel exhibition and the sixties collection. Lovely shop with Dutch designer bags on offer - my husband was going to buy me one till he saw the prices. Still, a snip compared to a Mulberry. Oh well, dream on!Lovely tea room, beware, lots of stairs.
