This windmill stands not far from a train staion. So, it's very difficult to miss it. And, I think, the best way to start your walk in Leiden is to see the town from an open lookout of the mill at high of 14 meters. At once you can see and get impression of old roofs and walls, and sweetest canals, and gorgeuos chirches. The museum itself is quite interesting with its working mechanisms and beautifully decorated rooms and lof of steps.
This old windmill is the genuine article. Children, especially boys - of all ages - will love it. The mill still works perfectly and though looks primitive the flour it produces is once again atvthe hight of fashion. It is a pain to get there but worth it, if you have young boys in tow.
been to holland a lot but this was the first time we have been in a wind mill it was good to see the workings and how they used to live if you do go there are a lot of steps and are fairly steep but we think it was worth it
I just happen upon this by chance, I had a Dutch rail pass and set out from Amsterdam on several day trips ...went to Lieden searching for Plymouth Pilgrim sights (none)! I had this wonderful sight all to myself on morning...the fast spinning blades and creaking, the view...a travel dream....don't miss....also in Holland,go to Delft,Utrecht....all with different ambiance from Amsterdam
This windmill is huge. Learn about daily life for the Miller and his family and see their residential quarters andthe mill. I was surprised by how fascinating this was (they operate in Dutch, English, French and German, so all are welcome)
We saw this on the maps and tourist guides so we walked to it and it was a well worth it day. Nice streets with great building leading up to this nice monument of human ingenuity .
A walk up and down the windmill and a great explanation of the history of the use of windmills in the Netherlands was well worth the small entree fee.
Dutch history and geography are inextricably associated with windmills, so anyone interested in these, or in engineering and/or industrial history, should take the opportunity to visit the Valk windmill in Leiden. That is, if one is able to climb steep stairs: information and artifacts are clearly laid out, but getting to them might be difficult or impossible for some. Those who can rise to the challenge, though, will be rewarded not just with information on and an inside view of this icon of regional history, but also with a great view of the city.
Really enjoyed the visit to the Windmill. Very traditional living rooms, friendly staff and the little shop had some nice items at reasonable prices. Lovely view from the landing outside. A step back in time.
This is a great experience to feel the power that drove Ducth develop, ent in the 17th and 18th centuries. This flour mill is in complete working order and the intricate wooden gearing meccanisms are there for all to see...but do go on a windy day to really 'feel' the building tremble. Amazing, great fun and near the other musuems in the town
This windmill is very interesting but probably not for those with small children or with mobility issues. The views of Leiden from the platform are stunning and it seems incredibly high. The museum is very interesting and gives lots of info about grinding corn and Dutch history. The stairs are steep and getting down again is a challenge.
I have been there actually already a couple of times and it doesn't get boring. It's so nice to step back into the past and see how thinbgs went in those days. On the balcony you have a great view over the city. I find a visit very worthwhile.
Well worth a visit but not if you have mobility issues. The stairs get steeper and narrower the higher you go. A little bit challenging descending but the view was great.
valued and video in English for the explanation about the windmill; so the forigners could understand more
Very real step back in time and into an actual working windmill. You realize how hard the families had to work and what a small space they actually lived in.
