This church was a bit difficult to find so make sure that you set out with a map. The building itself looks quite plain from the outside, however once we entered I was really blown away by the internal woodwork. I would recommend taking a little walk to this church if you have some spare time in Porto
We tried to visit this church on Feb 28 2015, but unfortunately found it closed to the public. They are doing some work (excavations?) on the little square in front of the entrance, so there is no way in. It is not clear for how long this will be, but it looks like they'll be busy for a while still.
This church, while small, has immediate visual impact. It is classic baroque with ornate being an understatement. If you like baroque, and I do, don't miss it
This church is unbelievably beautiful. It's little and 'hidden' from the rest of the city but it's near the centre. It has a lot of what they call 'talha dourada', gold. It's definitely worth to pay visit!
Firstly in one of my Porto guide books I saw the pictures of some unbelievably beautiful charge but didn´t know which one was that. Some months later I entered there while waiting the guided tour to the Palacio de Bolsa and was really surprised. It´s almost everything is golden inside and also you can see some antic installations which are really impressive. Think that it´s one of the most beautifull churches I´ve ever seen!
It's a hidden small church near Fontainhas. It has one of the most intricate gilt carvings i've ever seen. Very nice indeed.Once there, dont forget to visit Fernandina Wall (Muralha Fernandina)
An interior that takes you back in time and shows you how gold can be used in such a beautiful way!The precious and detailed works in the walls are simply amazing. If you have the chance to listen to a concert there...then it is perfection!
Best view in town but can be difficult to ascend/descend tower steps when busy as very tight. Now costs €2 per person entrance fee despite guid book saying the tower is free?
From the outside you would never know that within is beautiful, gold leaf and outstanding architecture.
This is a tiny church not easy to locate but the wooden sculptures covering all the walls are just great! Incredible to see all the level of details put in this artwork.
The christ with blood statue lying in a vitrine is bizarre but the rest of the church was nice...well.. it's a church as many others inside. Prefer the outside.
It only opens in the afternoon, after 3PM. But it is worth to visit. Barroco style, with lots of gold.
Sadly, due to the time on this trip, the church was closed when we got there. However, it is still worth seeing the outside as it is very ornate and tremendously large. From the top, where this church is located, the views of Porto and Villa Nova de Gaia are breathtaking. It is one of the most picturesque views of the town.
Sitting above the river Douro this church is and imposing feature, but the real delight comes when you get inside the church. It is simply and utterly beautiful.
It is a marvelous hidden gem in Porto. Our tour guide took us there and told us it was her favorite church in the city. The outside is so humble so you would be surprised once walking inside. There are many many churches in Portugal but make sure you don't miss this one.
