Very beautiful and worth the trip. My friends and I visited this weekend. While riding through the area for things to do we stumbled across Amicalola Falls State Park. The falls were absolutely beautiful! We got a great workout as we climb the falls. We were tired but inspired by the natural beauty that surrounded us.
You can drive up to a parking area below the falls. Park and start up the stairs. It's a boat-load of stairs but you do not need to go more than a short ways to really appreciate the view from below. The view from the top is nice (you can park there also) but it's really hard to fully appreciate the beauty of the falls from above.
We enjoyed hiking up to the falls. The stairs are rather steep, but the climb is invigorating. We afterwards had a picnic under a nearby shelter. The weather was chilly and perfect. The leaves were changing, so all was well with the world.
This was our first stop on a 11 day vacation finally viewing 28 falls. Simply put Amicalola is impressive and relatively easy to get to, so see it!. You can drive to the visitor center and view the falls from the bottom, or you can climb the steps (don't bother) or drive to the top of the falls. The view from the top is nothing special, but it is only 100 ft or so from the upper parking lot to the top of the falls. The bottom trail, to the left of the visitor center, is about 1/2 mile to the bridge that goes directly across the falls and the view is spectacular. Continuing over the bridge, steps lead down to an ever better view on the other side of more of the falls, I suggest you take them. Just take your time and you will find the walk vs wow factor a good one. There are other hikes here, but I laid out the easiest one for viewing of the falls.
Amicalola Falls is a wonderful State Park that provides facilities to accommodate everyone's needs...perfect for family stays, families with children, family reunions, etc.
Take the stairs and get a little work out while there too. The fall is spectacular! Plenty of trails to walk. Natural at its best!
Great views from three locations along the falls. Lots of trails for any level. View from lodge was awesome. Be prepared for steep grades along the way
We were on our way to Sapphire NC and stopped in Gainesville, GA. We went to church in the morning and took a detour to see Amicolola Falls. Our purpose wasn't to stay at the park long, but just to see the falls. We started at the parking lot that was .3 of a mile from the middle where you could look up and get the best view. We decided to take the 429 steps to the top. The 429 steps are challenging and strenuous however you can stop ever 50-100 steps and sit on benches that have been provided. These falls have a longer fall (not taller) than any falls east of the Mississippi so if you like both waterfalls and mountain views, it was worth the detour for us!
Our family loves all the falls in North Carolina, so on this trip we decided while in Georgia we would visit Here... Kids were up for a small hike, but because the directions and maps were confusing it ended up much longer than expected. Kids, 12 and 7 years made it from the welcome center up the trails all the way to the top of the falls. We tracked up the trails and not the stairs, then walked down the 600+ steps in the pouring rain making it to a reflection pond where we opted to take the roadway back to the car. Staff and maps were not very informative. Falls were okay in Comparison to NC.. I wouldn't say worth it to the kids. We had and Okay time, but we made it an adventure!
We took a flight from Fort Myers to Atlanta, GA. An hour and a Half drive to the park in a rental car. This park was beautiful. The water falls alone make this trip worthwhile. We walked the 600 steps down from the top and walked back up the same way. Great workout. We hiked and in the evening we went back to our cabin and prepared dinner. If you don't like to cook there is a beautiful restaurant at the lodge. We live in SW FL but we are from the Northeast. We need to get away from the flatness of FL sometimes and this is the perfect place. We enjoyed it as much as our trip to Yosemite National Park. If you like spending time with the beauty of Nature as a couple or family this is the place.
Lovely water falls in a state park. Camp if you want or spend a day relaxing and fishing. Bring a lunch and the kids will have a blast. I liked it all. No negative comments here.
Climbing up and down the stairs is just part of the experience. Your knees might ache a bit the next day, but I would say its worth it...at least go halfway down and look up at the falls. I was lucky enough to be in a cabin close enough to hear the rush of water as I fell asleep. It was one of the tallest I've seen. My only complaint has to do with people. I was horrified to see a number of water bottles thrown off the sides of stairs...honestly, why would anyone defile such a place with their trash. Maybe they should install some cameras to deter litterbugs...
Love Amicalola falls in Dawsonville Georgia. FYI, If you're not in shape start at the top and hike down the falls.
Nice hike to the top. Must be in pretty good shape as it is a step climb (up stairs) toward the end. The views are amazing.
As soon as we got to the park, the lady said that the park was closed due to being rented out by a private company!! We were all pretty mad. We did however, go to the Reflecting Pond and saw the waterfall from a distance. We were, however, allowed to go up the trail to the top of the falls!! Man, that view was beautiful!! My mom described it as the "most beautiful waterfall she has or probably will ever see!!" We took probably about a gazillion pictures and had a ton of fun!! My 7 year old co-critics had a blast running around in their coon-skin caps!! All in all... This visit was..... INCREDIBLE!!
