walter f. george lock and dam

There are cabins and RV sites all over. The lake offers great fishing and fun southern atmosphere. I really have enjoyed being not to far from there.

This dam is formed from the Chattahoochee River along the Georgia/Alabama border. It was completed in 1962 and produces enough hydroelectricity to power 56,000 homes. At 88 feet hight, the lock is supposedly the 2nd highest in the US. It is confusing because the reservoir is called Lake Eufala in Alabama and Lake Walter F George in Georgia. You can visit from either state on each side of the dam-we were on the Alabama side. You can't drive directly over the dam, but you can get up high and close. There was a fishing platform with lots of fishermen close to the water flow, however, you would have to walk down (and eventually back up) several flights of stairs. There was also a giant turbine on display and clean restrooms, but we didn't see any picnic tables.
