We were fortunate to tag onto a third grade class field trip. The Director of Education, Tonya Parker, was excellent describing the culture to the students in a way that was educational to them as well as us. The other employees were just super also. It was a joy to be there.

This is not a large museum but it is definitely a must see. It is great for a family but I also enjoyed it as a 50 year old single male. The history of the time comes alive.

Good time lines and some great art work on display. The video shows were interesting too. Well set out.

I highly recommend taking a few hours and visiting this museum. Very interesting and educational. Well done, absolutely watch movie about the Crafts escape from slavery. Harriet Tubman was simply amazing. The people running this are as nice as they can be and helped us understand where things were in Macon.

I was pleasantly surpassed by this museum! The staff was extremely friendly. The day I visited they were changing over an exhibit, so a large portion of things were not up, but the permanent collection did not disappoint. I was expecting it to be solely work related to Tubman, but there was a good mixture of mediums and artwork of African American artists. If you want to see the original I'd go this year as next year they are opening a rather large brand new location in Macon in 2015

The photos and artifacts on display are incredible. In one photo during a garbage collector strike in the 60's a group of Black men wearing a sign stating: I am a man hits your heart strong. I wish all ages and all people could see the photo. There are some one of a kind gift shop options and a passionate staff for assistance. I just can't wait for the new museum to be constructed! The Museum offers a day camp during the summer ...another way they serve the city. They need assistance on the funding I was informed.

The museum is very small and the permanent display is quite limited. They do some excellent special exhibitions, though. I saw the one on Georgia chain gangs from the 1930s and it was superb.

I participated in a series of learning events at the Tubman. I learned about the Craft Couple who made history during the Civil War. I have lived in Middle Georgia for years and appreciated the opportunity to learn about people I had never heard of.

More facts are crammed into this little museum than one can imagine. A fine tribute to a most interesting life.

This museum deserves commentary. It has noteworthy memorabilia from the era of Harriet Tubman as well as items featuring her role as the Conductor of the Underground Railroad. To fully appreciate the information on display, reading is necessary of the various letters and presentations. There is a small gift shop with relevant literature and some souvenir items. And, I was traveling with family, but without any children.

I was at a two week conference in Macon, GA and on a free weekend, decided to visit the Tubman Museum. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! The building was low and I thought it was going to be something quick. I ended up spending almost two hours looking around. At first when you walk in, there are murals on the wall and charts which tell you who each painted figure is. I sort of panicked because I thought the whole place would be like that. From there though, you are led through a few rooms that have some abstract art by African Americans (not really my thing). The next thing you are led to is a room with folk art which I found delightful. Past that is a room devoted to inventions by African Americans. Did you know that an African American man invested the light bulb as a consultant to the Edison company. The upstairs has a chair lift for handicap as well as a flight of stairs and the flooring seems rather bumpy and uneven, though it is covered with rug. The story of Ellen Craft - a former slave that fled to England for fear that she'd have to answer to a warrant for being a runaway slave is fascinating. The pictures upstairs are moving. For example, the museum has a picture of African American men protesting for civil rights, holding signs that read "I am a man". I highly recommend that if you are in Macon, you visit the museum. I also recommend that you go there alone so that you can take plenty of time to read the tags next to the displays without someone rushing you along. The gift shop also had some really cool things as well.
