Wow - what an experience to fly above the earth (and the hills) like an eagle! Nothing like it. The views are fantastic and the thrills are exhilarating. This is certainly not for the faint of heart - but the instructors are very experienced and talk and guide you through the whole event. The pre-flight instructions/video are helpful.Great event to do with a group of friends. Be flexible as the weather can change and alter plans. Let the instructor know if you get dizzy from circles and they can widen or tighten the circling to accommodate.Amazing bucket list item to do!
what a amazing experience beautiful views and a great staff. I got to learn basic skills like turning how to go up and down. Landing was smooth and fun
This place is fantastic! The landing area is well kept and fully equipped. Staff is very efficient and helpful. The area at the top is also great, with limited parking. We talked with people from Wisconsin, New York, Minnesota and Kentucky. It is amazing these people travel such a great distance to come to this small community, but they all were very well pleased and satisfied with the decision. Take the time to search out this facility, it is well hidden, and relax and enjoy the views and the gliding.
The check in was efficient and helpful, all the staff were enjoyable and answered all my questions. I brought three kids, ages 11-17, and felt very safe and secure in this adventure. The pilot and tandem instructor were wonderful. I added on the pictures from the glider wing and that was a great add on! We did the 3000' hang glide and it was well worth the price!
The flying and the instructors were amazing! I first did the introductory package and decided to go back and do the mountain package for $699. Hangliding is expensive and that is fine if you are expecting it, but after everything I was asked to pay an extra $350 in mandatory fees (go carts, USHPA membership, "club" membership) just to use my package I had purchased. In fact, I could not use the 3 mountain runs at all because I was pressured to "upgrade" because I had used all my ground school training (of 50 runs off the hill). Upgrading is anywhere from $300 to $1000 depending on what you upgrade to (from mountain to eagle or VIP package). Also keep in mind that all the packages expire after 2 years. So overall, just be aware when purchasing one of the larger packages that $699 could actually mean up to $2000 (in my case ~$1100 because I decided not to upgrade to finish my package).
I love this location for Hang Gliding. They do one superior job. This weekend there were folks from Maine, Illinois, South Carolina...and other states. And they also love this place.
My 13 year old daughter and I recently enjoyed the introductory one-day experience here. Actually, enjoyed is too mild a word. I think we're both hooked. ;-) The morning school is very much like a bird learning to fly. The instructors spend ample time emphasizing basic safety, you begin halfway down a "bunny slope," and you will feel proud if you glide a few feet on your first attempt. The afternoon tandem, in which the ultralight tow planes and the hang glider tandem pros do all the work, is the kicker -- truly the ultimate adrenaline rush. I definitely recommend both if you've time for them. The instructors for the morning training, Tyler and Aaron, and the pilots for the afternoon tandem flights, Mikey and Jason were all top-notch professionals, of course, and very friendly as well. All of the staff goes out of their way to be accommodating and encouraging to newcomers. We also took advantage of the accommodations at the flight park. Our Mountain View cabin was very basic, but clean and comfortable. It included a microwave, mini-fridge, and coffee maker (some cabins have kitchenettes as well). And the convenience of being able to walk from your tandem flight to your room is a big plus! Two caveats. First, if you plan on doing even the one-day training, you need to be in pretty good physical shape. The training involves running for sprint-distance with the glider (roughly 50 pounds) on your shoulders, and doing so repeatedly. Second, it's best if you have a "back-up day" planned when you make your reservation. While the tandem flights aren't as wind-sensitive, even a moderate wind and your instructors will ground your training day. That's a good thing for safety, obviously, but -- especially if you're traveling some distance -- you'll want to take that into account.
Not a cheap event but really good folks and a very fun experience. Kids and I each went and loved it. Thought it might be scary but never felt any fear. Again, guides and staff were awesome. Certainly something I would do again.
I discovered Lookout Mountain Flight Park a year ago when I was in the area and stopped to watch some folks taking off from the ramp at the top of the mountain. I was alternately fascinated and horrified, but pretty sure there was a tandem glide in my future. :) The staff was great. From the phone call to schedule forward, they were professional and efficient. Jackie greeted us at the bottom of the mountain and put us at total ease by explaining everything as well as sharing her fear of heights, and that if she could do it, anyone can! We did upgrade from 1,500 feet to 3,000 feet at her recommendation, but it felt like good heartfelt advice, not an "upsell." I'm so glad we did!! 1,500 feet takes you to the top of the mountain, but 3,000 takes you to the clouds. I reached out and touched one! :) Clifton was the instructor and he was amazing! His knowledge and experience showed and gave me the confidence to relax and enjoy. It was really cool getting to do the flying, as well as letting go and seeing that the glider can really fly itself. We also opted for the picture/video package, and if your budget will allow, I definitely recommend. The camera takes pictures every 10 seconds, so even looking at the still shots, you can remember the event in detail. The DVD comes about a week after your visit and is nicely edited and set to music. Again, it was fun to be able to relive the experience as well as to share with friends and family. They mean it when they say that anyone can do this. There are no special physical skills needed. Unless you have an absolutely paralyzing fear of heights, I highly, highly recommend. http://youtu.be/TDZFrfsRUk0
This was my 1st time hang gliding and I don't think it will be my last. What an incredible experience! I was afraid that I was going to be too terrified to really enjoy it but my pilot, Clifton, was super awesome and knowledgeable about the sport which allowed me to relax and really take in the moment. The entire staff was very professional and friendly. I'm pretty much afraid of heights but this feels absolutely safe. Definitely worth trying out...you may only live once!
while visiting family in tennessee we like to drive up to lookout mountain hang gliding. breathtakingly beautiful views and exhilerating to watch the hang gliders literally run off the mountainside jump pad. we like to sit on the rocks which are close to the edge..but if that scares you, there are railed viewing decks provided. on the saturday that we visited we saw non-stop action! not only will you see the hang gliders take off from pad..but you can watch the tandem flights pulled up into the sky from down in the valley. they realeased the gliders in view of lookout location and the pilots flew close to mountain top..amazing & entertaing to anyone who loves aviation. the grandkids love this place. And several of us plan a tandem ride soon. Do visit the upstairs "office/shop"...interesting place also.
Wow - wanted to fly like a bird - dreams can come true!! Exhilarating experience - worth the extra $$ to fly twice as high (3000'). The flight crew were terrific with loads of experience. The hanglider actually can fly itself. You'll be invited to let go and see for yourself. You'll also get the opportunity to man the controls!! What fun!!One word of caution - let the instructor know if you are prone to get dizzy/nautious from circular movement. It's fun for the instructor to do tight circular rolls but can leave you incapacitated for a while afterwards so speak up.Highly recommend this!! My dad is in his mid-seventies and had a great time!
This is the best experience ever! I go just about every year to the hang gliding park and do as many tandems as i can get in! The staff is great and everyone wants to make sure you have a great experience. I have rented places to stay at the landing zone and have always had a great time. its fun to sit on your deck and watch the hang gliders being towed up or launching from the mountain. I can hardly wait to retire so I can finally get the time to learn how to launch off the mountain all by myself. Go and try it, you will be hooked.
Friend and I went after finding a Groupon. Wonderful adventure. Very good company. My pilot was excellent and I always felt safe. Got to try to fly the hand glider myself which was awesome. Had to wait for the wind to die down before we could go up but the wait was fun with the other customers. They called for extra pilots so the wait was at a minimum. I would definitingly go again and I wished I lived closer so I could take lessons. JUST DO IT!!!!!
This was my first Hang gliding experience, The staff are experienced and friendly and safe to glide with them. The gears are all well maintained and safe to try with them. The only part i didn't like much about is that they glide just around the small area making circle and bring you down, It took me about just 8 - 10 min to come down from 3000 ft height. The photos and videos package needs to be added separately if you need it and that depends entirely on the glide you get , Some of the glides and pilot have good cameras and they get you nice photos and videos from different angle and some are fixed at a certain position, and you get to see only your back all through the video and photos, but my friend got a very nice coverage of the Scenic view below. So its just relative.
