best seen and explained on a horse-drawn carriage ride - live host (not recorded) let's a person ask questions as the tour progresses - lots of info, much relevance to our societal and financial situation today
The tour that takes you into the "cottages" is the way to go. Our girl guide was full of facts and stories. The trip was well worth it to get an insight into the ways of the filthy rich at the turn of the 20th century.
Spent most of two days here. Stayed at the Club House (see separate review). Ate dinner in the Courtyard Cafe (see separate review). We had a wonderful time stepping back into history. The grounds are beautiful. The hotel and houses are fun to tour. The turtle rescue center was interesting. If you are looking for an active beach town with shopping, great beaches, entertainment and a bar scene, you need to look elsewhere. But if you enjoy a glimpse into a bygone era, walking or pedaling quiet lanes lined with beautiful trees, sitting on a veranda sipping a drink and enjoying a little bit of elegance, this is a great place to spend a couple of days. If you take a tour, you can get inside a couple of the nicer "cottages." Spend some time wandering the halls of the hotel and look at the vintage photos that line the walls. It's not hard at all to imagine yourself back in time.
Loved the history and charm of the island. Lots to see and walk around. Beautiful old "cottages" of the rich and club house.
Rent a bike and cover some ground. The island is pleasant and relaxing. We lucked out on the weather so not hot or buggy. No crowds this time of the year.
Beautiful! Didn't dislike anything. Had no idea about the history when I booked our stay. There are a lot of interesting fun facts you learn about the island on your tour.
This was our first trip to Jekyll Island. Not knowing anything about the island, we opted to start our visit with a trolley tour of the historic district. So glad we did! The tour guide was a walking encyclopedia of fascinating history. The tour lasted about 1 1/2 hrs and included a tour inside 2 of the mansions, including the Rockefeller's.
Travel to the beginning of the Twentieth Century and visit the colossal " cottages" of the wealthiest people in America as they partied the winters away on Jekyll Island. The entire place is unbelievable. I spend my summers at my second home just off of the island and I am a regular visitor to the Historic District. It is simply fascinating!
The Historic Jekyll Island area was very nice. It was clean and quiet. Great strolling and walking paths.
You feel like you were in a lapse time. We walked the area and took our time enjoying nature and the water views. There were people who rode their bikes around the island. But we enjoyed strolling the historic area on our own pace. There are eating, shops, gift shops and beautiful trees and the old cottages and manison that were there in the past.
I really liked the ease of getting around. Bikes for rent, but too chilly while we were there. Many interesting shops. So much to do, so little time. Spent most of our time at the beach.
You can imagine what life must have been like in the heyday of the great cottages dotted around the island. Paradise I think!A perfect sport for photographers with its wealth of live oaks, scenic beaches and ocean views. A must if you are in the area.
This is a great place that we have been enjoying for about 15 years. We live on Amelia Island in Florida, but this has been our hang out. We enjoy romantic walks here in the evening. The view is amazing.
Took the tram tour around the historic district which allowed you to see inside several of the "cottages" that the early millionaire members of the Jekyll Club had built. The tour was one and a half hours and Kathy, our tour guide had so much info and had such a great delivery that we really enjoyed ourselves. Would recommend it to everyone!
The many shops and beautiful location makes this a must see when visiting Jekyll Island. There are tours of many of the homes and it is very walkable.
