Been here a couple of times, and I really don't get it. I understand that it may be closing down in the near future and can't say that I am totally surprised. There are a number of nice places to visit in the area, but this place has been let go for some time now.
Great place for lunch, sandwiches made to order on homemade breads. You can pick up homemade chocolates- Yummy
We visited in mid September and there were still many beautiful flowers to see. Had a nice talk with one of the owners and how his family is trying to revive the gardens. It is a beautiful place and I hope they are going to be able to continue restoring the grounds. The restaurant had very good food and the service was great. Stop in the store and buy some Blueberry Butter and hand made soaps. Worth the trip.
We visited over Columbus Day weekend and had a wonderful time. Our young children enjoyed the apple cider and apple butter demos. Pony rides, buggy rides and a visit to the restaurant made for a fun family day.
The food lacked flavor. They kept running out of food on the buffet and it would take at least 15 minutes to refill the items(one at a time). There was always something empty. We talked to the manager about the problem. She deducted $2 from our bill. Big whoop! The server was fine. The restaurant was nice. Will never eat there again.
Rockome Gardens is a wonderful look back into how we used to live. The Amish buggy ride is a must! They have a one room school house the original farm house and a barn for you to tour at your leisure. There is a restaurant on the property but we had already eaten lunch. There are also some nice gift shops on the grounds.
The restaurant was absolutely beautiful. The staff was beyond pleasant but the food left a lot to be desired. I didn't understand the 5 star rating unless the rest of the eateries in town were really, really bad.
If you are looking for Disney perfection this is not the place. It is old and worn, but still enjoyable. There are lots of flowerbeds that were stunning; the Martin house was very interesting along with the Amish museum. Many of the sidewalks are old and very uneven so you have to be careful where you walk. Some of the rock walls are falling down and they were reworking one of the gardens with the trains. It is very peaceful with lots of Amish buggies going by on the road next to the gardens so you hear the clop clop clop which is relaxing. I enjoyed my visit, $10 is a little high but I stayed about 100 minutes and slowly walked through all the gardens and took lots of pictures. If you are in the area and interesting in a nice place to spend an hour or two, I would recommend it. Just don’t expect perfection, it is old and worn and needs a lot of work.
Loved walking thru this place, so much to see and do. Lived the blacksmith, all the cockscombs, the wine is amazing, a really nice place to go, we spent the weekend taking in the entire town.
I absolutely love everything about the gardens. The shops restaurant, I went as a little kid with myggrandparents and the memories cant be beat these days. Kids are to technology involved and this is the place to open up eyes to the beauty of the world around you.
Love the shop with the foods near the road, planned to come visit Rockome on our honeymoon two months ago, but got sidetracked, so we visited this weekend. Sad to see the haunted cave was closed, but other than that, it's really peaceful. it's nice to stop and literally smell the roses, instead of always being on the go, so engrossed in technology. The gardens are beautiful and very well kept! I know how hard it is just to do yard upkeep, I can't imagine all the work they do to keep it looking beautiful! It was very well attended, even though it had been raining that morning and sprinkling off and on. My husband and I bought a couple of trinkets from a couple of the shops, as well as from the grocery store. The restaurant is really, really good! It was obvious that some, if not all of the food, was made from scratch. This will always be a favorite visit for me for years to come. The only thing I would change that I really loved was the barn that had the look out used to have an antique shop, good prices, very interesting items, but it's not there anymore. Definitely something a thrift store, antique shopper would have loved! Got to talk to Joni about Johnny in the Raggedy Ann shop. It looks wonderful in there! Nice update!
We loved this place. Read a lot of bad reviews about the place but decided to stop anyway. We enjoyed strolling around here looking at all the stuff. The flowers and rock sculptures were so pretty. We could of stayed most of the day if we read all the info there. The food and stores are great here. We will definitely stop here again to see how it is coming along.
We traveled to Arcola, IL and stopped at Rockome Gardens, when you think of gardens you think ok it will be garden vegetables, or flowers. Rockome is a lot more than all that, it is showing you how the Amish Community lives and strives together. It is a very leisure walk through the community, they have a blacksmith shoppe, a school house, a museum and 17 minute film telling about how the Amish came to Illinois. If your in the area i would suggest you make the stop, we were really impressed with everything, and if your a camera/photo enthusist like me, it is great for taking photos too.
Finally stopped in as we live pretty close. The price is high and it is not teen friendly. Not much to do. My toddler liked the play area. I do not recommend you to stop if you have kids. There were 3 sad ponies in the animal petting area, but nothing else. The buildings are dilapidated looking, and it cost extra for a "pony" ride (they have the ponies tied up to a hot walker). The train ride is free. I did not inquire about a buggy ride.
They should post on their website if they close for slight weather. We drove 2 and 1/2 hours from St. louis this past Saturday to find they were closed. It had rained that morning early apparently because the time after we arrived was dry all day. There were a lot of disappointed tourist that day. We ate at the restaurant (chicken and soup were good) shopped at the store and hung out in Arthur for the day, so we made the best of it. Wish we would have known though then we would have saved the Gardens for another time and did one of our alternatives this past Saturday.
