Francis Park, at first glance, seems like a thousand other Midwest parks. Playground, picnic tables, some recreational opportunities. But, then, there's the mansion - the Woodland Mansion. The story behind it is too extensive and too amazing to share here, but do the research and visit this place. Hand built, brick by brick, featuring a cool air system, interesting architecture, and a serene setting in the woods, it is a gem that seems to transport you to a gentler time (although it wasn't). Do your research first, then go see what Francis built.
Our Camping Club recently toured the Fred Francis Woodland Palace in the Francis Park in Kewanee, IL. The unique home of Frederick Francis was built in 1890, out of brick, stone, and native wood, all of which were transported to the building site by Fred's only means of transportation, a bicycle. The house features disappearing doors and windows, an air cooling system, radiant heat deflectors in the fireplace chimney and running water, all without the benefit of electricity. The life story of Fred and Jeanie Francis is quite extraordinary and very interesting to hear. In Woodland Palace, one can see evidence of Fred's talents and interests in all areas of his life, and then some. He was a mechanical engineer and mathematician, an inventor and builder, a poet and philosopher, an artist and lecturer, an eccentric and a genius. Our tour guide was excellent, and we would highly recommend taking a tour of this unique home. The cost is $2 per person.
