Thank you Heather for the kind review. It was a pleasure watching you grow up at our place and now we get to watch your kids grow up!! It is great to see the next generation continue skating. Roller skating is a life long family activity and we love be able to provide a safe place for families to come.
Thank you DSwen3 for your kind review. It is greatly appreciated when customers take the time to post something positive about a family business.
Thank you for your kind review. We hope you continue to enjoy visiting us.
Thank you for your kind review. We hope you have been back to see us. We use the tightened wheels to help the little one get the idea that the skate as to have all four wheels take the floor at the same time. If they try to "walk" by placing the heel down first as you do when you are walking, when the wheels are rolling, they tend to fall more often. Once they learn to place all four wheels on the floor at the same time, then you move on to "rolling" wheels. We used this approach when we taught a tot program and it worked very well.
Thank you Big_bro_1_usa for your kind review. Hope you to see you back soon!
We appreciate your suggestions. We are not sure when you visited but one of us (owners) are present at almost every session or private party with the exception of Saturday evenings. Every year we invest money into the upkeep of our facility. Some years we can do more than others, depending on the cash flow. Just this past December we redid our entrance and exit lobbies. During the summer, we will be going through and freshening up the paint in the entire rink, as we do every summer. Although we are not sure what you mean by “current colors”, we know that the kids love that the neon fluorescent paints on the wall glow under black light. We are aware that there is some unevenness to the floor. Several years ago the copper from two of our air conditioning units was stolen, leaving us without a/c for over two weeks during 90 degree plus weather. During those weeks it took a toll on the floor and every summer since we have worked on getting the floor in better condition. You mention the inner circle, which is something that many rinks had years ago. Some rinks today do still have them but our feeling is that if you paid to skate no matter what your ability you have a right to skate anywhere on the floor. It is not right to force “beginners” or “slow” skaters to skate in only one specified area. We do ask those who are trying “tricks” to do those in the center of the floor and point out the area between the inner “globe” lights as the acceptable area for this. We also limit the “tricks” that are permitted for safety reasons.Every one of the issues that you mentioned about the floor are things that are already against our rules and we do not want happening. We follow industry standards, as well as the IL Roller Skating Assumption of risk. Our rules are clearly stated on signs as you enter the building, as well as announced at each and every session. To make sure the DJ doesn’t leave out any part of the rules, they were recorded and that is what is played each time. The DJ, as well as the manager, monitors the skating floor. The DJ is instructed to inform people personally if they are violating the rules, unless a general announcement would be more effective. We also have a microphone for the manager to use if they feel they need to correct something they see happening on the floor. When you have a floor guard skating around on the floor to monitor, the floor guard will actually see less of what is happening than having the floor guard watching from ends of the floor. Despite that, we still have people breaking the rules, so that is when we address the violator as mentioned earlier: either personally or via the microphone. We do make announcements about skating in the same direction when we see someone going the wrong way, however undoubtedly there will still be someone who will pass the exit then turn around and skate the wrong way to get to the exit rather than making another lap. It does not occur to them that it is dangerous. As far as skaters standing along the wall… if they are stopped along the straightaway, they are asked to keep moving or to exit the floor. If they are up along the snack bar wall, they are asked to move if there are beginners trying to get through. However, since this is outside the traffic pattern, we try to focus on the rules that are being broken which are more hazardous. We agree with you that carrying objects on the floor (phones, purses etc.) as well as skating with ear buds is dangerous, which is why we do not permit it and it is addressed when seen or has been brought to our attention by another patronMusic – all we can say is everyone has their own tastes and what one may think is truly skate music, someone else will think it is the worst thing they ever heard. We play mainly Top 40 music with the exception of the Saturday late skate where we play music from the 70’s forward. Patrons are always permitted to make requests and our DJ’s are instructed to try and play them if time permits, unless we have deemed the song inappropriate.Outside lighting could be more, we will agree, but we don’t feel that it is so poorly lit that someone would feel unsafe. Lights around the perimeter are one of our future upgrades but it will be accent lighting to light the building. We appreciate your feedback. Please know that we have already addressed the staff with your concerns about the floor as we do not want the floor to be in any way unsafe for any of our guests.
Thank you Kristina for the kind review. We have owned Skateland now for 20 years so we see many kids whose parents skated at our facility when we first took over. We continue to work hard at providing a safe place for the kids to come and be with their friends just like we did "back in the day", when we started here at Skateland.
Sorry to hear that you did not like our facility. Let’s tackle some of your issues. As for the part of town – we are located on the southeast side of Rockford in an industrial complex. Our building sits between Stenstrom Rd and Sandy Hollow. This part of town is not considered “dangerous”, as far as we are aware. In regard to the music, we play Top 40 hits at most of our sessions and on Saturday nights we also mix in music from the 70’s through today. We screen our music very heavily when it comes to foul words, as well as content of the songs. We will not play music that has foul language or has a bad message regardless of how popular the song may be. We will take requests and our DJ’s make every attempt to play all the requests, time permitting. The food we serve is typical of any snack bar. We serve all beef hotdogs, corndogs, nachos, soft pretzels, cheese sticks and baked fries. We also make our own pizza, basically from scratch and use quality ingredients, purchased from a local Italian deli.
Thank you for your kind review. We work hard at providing affordable family fun.
Thank you for your kind review. Since purchasing the business twenty yrs ago we are constantly reinvesting in the business trying to keep it looking fresh and clean. As for the hours, many skating rinks across the USA are closed on Sundays during the summer because this is a slow time of year for our business. Since we are a private business and not taxpayer subsidized, we have found that having limited hours works best for us.
