This place is a good little place to hang out for a few hours with young kids. When we went, they didn't charge for visits, but don't know about current policies. It was not spectacular, but it was a solid, local place, to just go somewhere with the kids for a couple hours.
You don't expect this little museum to have the displays and traveling exhibits. The National Geographic one that just ended on Presidential photographers we outstanding. Keep your eye on the place, free parking and NO lines to get in
As a long-time resident of the area, I am not sure what was keeping me away from this lovely place! I really enjoyed the special exhibit of the "President's Photographer" but as an avid boater, my favorite was the local history of the Chain of Lakes (sitting in the boat and watching the video was fun). The postcards were really interesting to look at as well, taking you back to a different time and place. I would LOVE to go to the Civil War re-enactment; waiting for the next event!
Republican or Democrat this is a wonderful exhibit. We really enjoyed the one hour movie following President Obama and his photographer. It was an interesting look inside the jobs of the President and his photographer. I highly recommend a visit.
The current exhibit, "The President's Photographer: 50 Years Inside the Oval Office," is on loan from National Geographic and spans the years from 1963 to the present. It closes January 11, 2015 and is a must-see.One of the permanent exhibits, The Mall of History, is also wonderful -- covering prohibition, Jack Benny, the lotus beds of Lake County, the train robbery at Roundout, etc.Home to the world's largest collection of postcards, the museum's postcard exhibit explains how Curt Teich -- a printer from Germany who immigrated to the U. S. in 1895 -- had a truly brilliant idea. Taking advantage of Chicago's location as railroad center of the country, he traveled by train to various small towns. There he would photograph scenic views and convince local businessmen to sell the picture postcards as souvenirs. His minimum order was 1,000 cards for $1.00. The businesses sold them for a penny each, so after the first 100 were sold, the remaining 900 were pure profit. Teich trained other photographers to criss-cross the country, getting orders. Eventually Teich postcards featured over 10,000 American cities and towns. At a penny to buy and a penny to mail, postcards were a bargain for the customer. Mail service was so quick that a person in Waukegan could mail a postcard in the morning asking a friend in Highland Park to meet the 6:00 p.m. train, assured that he would be picked up at the station on time.Don't miss this fascinating glimpse into Lake County and American history.
Wonderful museum on the grounds. Civil War reenactment the weekend I went. Museum building featured original clothing from the 1860's. Great event for adults and kids alike to attend.
This is a well constructed, nicely executed area museum. It has great topics, and media that would appear to old and young alike. Nestled in a Lake County Forest Preserve area, you can make a day out of it and enjoy the beautiful natural surrounding.
