Owner sold everything at auction in 2013. Very sorry to see it go, the boats were extraordinary. Two different maritime museums bought the major stuff, so those beautiful boats are now being appreciated by many more people. A sad loss for Welaka, though.
For anyone interested in older boats, this is a don't miss place to go. Really, really cool
Tried to go the week of 12 March 2012, sign says Closed with no current plans to reopen. Gave it an average rating only to satisfy requirement to post review.
Amazing wood inlay workmanship with great detail of period ships, boats, and other wood art. A most unique expeerience. Hours vary.
This unique privately run family maritime museum is simply a must see in the NE Florida area. The town is Welaka that is nestled on the banks of the St John's River so you can tie up at the public docks and walk the four blocks to the museum. There are all kinds of maritime things on display but the star are the hand crafted wooden boats that are simply beautiful works of arts. They also have a display of antique classic boats, outboard engines, working steam engines, figureheads, actually everywhere you look there is something to see. It's worth the drive from St. Augustine, Orlando, Jacksonville or Daytona Beach. A wonderful restaurant sits on the banks of the river next to the public boat docks too. Friendly town and a gem of a museum.
