Beautiful building. Much history. Many childhood memories at the memorial library. Very well maintained.
The President's birth home was very nice though we were there a bit early. Hence it was closed but viewed the grounds which was nice. The museum and library were also closed, however, the view was very appealing. Next time through will have to stop.
Not our greatest President but a great monument. Stop in and check out the local library - a beautiful setting.
This is a replica of the McKinley birthplace home, on the original site. Tours are available, and there is a media center on site. Special speakers are scheduled through the year.
Made of Marble/Granite this monument sits in downtown Niles and honors our 25th president who was killed during his 2nd term in office. A must see is the new exhibit in the adjoining museum , the first president to utilize campaign buttons in his run for office. Down the street is the boyhood home and reference center. View the bronze busts of cabinet members and early political leaders of the McKinley Era. In the nearby Union Cemetery is the resting place of the child of William and Ida McKinley and also "Harry Stevens" who invented the HOT DOG on a bun and the Scorecard in baseball. If visiting in the summer, take in a Scrappers Minor League baseball game an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians.
This place is just as nice as any memorial you would find in Washington DC. I suggest you park on the street in front of it and walk up the marble front walk for the full effect of how lovely this place is. If the free street parking is full there is also a free parking lot behind the building as well. Walk into the library and walk around they have art work and memorabilia around the library to look at. Then ask for them to let you into the museum part which is just across the court yard. It's a FREE self guided tour. The people who work there are super nice and will answer any questions you have. Kids may find it a little boring as they would any history museum. They are not open on Sundays and Saturday when the weather is nice in the spring, summer, and fall will more than likely have more than one wedding party taking pictures on the beautiful grounds.
Growing up near where McKinley is buried in Canton, OH, I have always had an interest in this US president. When we had a chance to see his birthplace memorial in Niles, OH, we jumped on the opportunity. While it was closed, we could walk around and see the monuments and such and enjoyed reading the outdoor signs. If you like US history, is a worth taking a little detour to visit this site.
The Wm. McKinley Memorial Library is a community gem. Marking the City where the 25 th., President of the United States was born, the Memorial offers an excellent community library with comfortable surroundings. The lovely building in white Georgian Granite graces the expansive lawn and well maintained grounds of the Memorial. It is a unique site to visit and a Trumbull County jewel.
The McKinley Birthplace Memorial offers a place of reflection and enlightenment into the history. of President McKinley
McKinley actually was from Canton by the time he was elected president and his tomb is over there. But apparently he was born in Niles, so NIles claims its native son with an impressive monument. It's a colonnaded building with a large statue of McKinley in the center and busts of other GOP presidents (TR, Taft, Harding, etc,) surrounding. There's apparently also an impressive library, but I've never seen it. Worth a quick stop and a short detour to see the memorial to Karl Rove's 2nd favorite president.
This is one of Niles, Ohio only claim to fame. It's right on the main drag in town and it's worthy of a stop and look through if you haven't already seen it. It also is home to the town's library. It's a beautiful place in a pretty tree-lined setting.
The Memorial itself is o.k. But the neighborhood was aweful! Dirty, scary dirty and not a place to leave your car unlocked!
This is a beautiful memorial. You want to pick a nice day to go, but other than that all I can say is enjoy.
While the building itself is stately and impressive, the exhibit presentation inside is outdated and not organized very well. It is hard to get a grasp on McKinley and his presidency. But the price is good - free. We were told his birthplace home, just down the street, "was not open at this time."
A really cool Washington DC like atmostphere right here in northeast Ohio!
