There is something beautiful about nature in the dead of winter. I recommend going out and enjoying it a little. The hiking trails are great.

This place is truly a gem; off the beaten path in SW Oklahoma. The perfect getaway from whatever you might call your normal life. A weekend visit will leave you refreshed and renewed.Yes, the accommodations at the lodge aren't necessarily the best, but it's because it's not heavily trafficked. If you can put away your expectations of being at a top-notch resort with lots of attention and pampering . . . go for it and soak up the soothing calm and quiet at this wondrous place.

I recently visited Quartz Mountain State Park on a business trip. The scenery is beautiful with trees, rocks and mountains everywhere. The water in the lake is very low, which is not their fault of course. However, when I checked into my room I was mortified to find dead bugs all over my carpet. They appeared to be beetles or water bugs. The carpet was old and worn, threadbare in some spots. The bathtub had rusted out spots in it. I stayed there for 3 days and never had my room cleaned. I had to go to housekeeping and get my own fresh towels and coffee for the room. There were vending machines just down the hall from my room but the Coke machine was never filled at all while I was there so I had to go to another floor to get soda. There were only 7 or so TV channels and the internet barely worked. Had trouble with the thermostat. Overall just a bad experience. The hotel definitely needs updating as far as the decor and carpet.

We stayed there one day. I do love the location as it is very scenic but this place is very poorly managed. If I was the owner of this place I would fire the front desk and the manager. We bought a deal on Groupon for a lake side king bed, when I arrived there I was told by Gary the front desk personal that they did not have the room I requested and somehow Groupon did not notify them about the booking. By the way I called couple of days back to confirm my booking again. I have a 7 month old baby and felt so inconvenienced when they gave us a regular queen bed room no view. Also the rooms were dated and there were two wasps alive that I killed myself in the room. I told the staff but they just shrugged it off. Imagine having a baby and dealing with a wasp. I felt I was totally ripped off for what I paid for. I would not ever go to that place again. it is a beautiful place but poorly managed. I would give this place a failure.

There are no words to describe how disappointed I am. When we first got there we thought this was going to be a great trip. The mountains were beautiful, and so was the lobby of the hotel we stayed at. First of all we booked a two-bed room and when we went in it was a one bedroom room. Then we went down to the beach. There were dead turtles everywhere, The turtles were still in their shells. The water stunk bad! There was glass and trash everywhere. We couldn't tell what was rocks and what was trash, and what was with the tires? There were tires everywhere. Then we went to the other beach the dock felt like it was about to drift off into the water. All the fish were gone because of "Gold Algae" it must not be good for people either. There was trash all over that beach too. Then we went to the dam. There were dead fish and trash on top of the water. The sundance cafe. It's the only place to eat there. I suggest packing food yourself. We went there for dinner we ordered than had to wait and hour before we got a simple dish and there was no one there! Then for breakfast we got there at 8:30 it was 11:30 before we got our food and it wasn't very good. I have been here recently. And I'm telling you don't go. And one more thing there were tons of telephone poles down everywhere. Don't go you'll just be disappointed. I was. There is a fee if you stay in a hotel.

This park is a gorgeous park and looks almost out of place in a relatively flat area. When the lake is full it is very picturesque. Definitely visit if you are in Western Oklahoma.

There are so many areas in this very old mountain range worth visiting, but we went to Baldy Point on this excursion. You start out in a wooded area with a view of sheer cliffs climbers like to use. If you continue on the trail you will make your way around to a more gradual climb. I've visited this area several times, but the beautiful weather made it something else on this visit (morning temps of 80 and a high of 100 not to be reached until 1:00 or so). I like to hike in the spring and fall due to the intense heat this area can draw, but this day (July 6) was fantastic and we even had some sprinkles that, thanks to the breeze, felt like a patio mister. The flora was spectacular. Wild flowers everywhere. Looks like we missed the cacti flowering but they were healthy and in abundance.I like hiking Quartz Mountain because the rock--red granite mostly--is rounded and fun to climb around on. The views of the surrounding farmland are magnificent. This mountain is not intimidating, but can be challenging. It is good to not forget you have to climb down after you scramble up and plan accordingly. I've never camped in the area as I have family close by, but the grounds look good. It's a great day--then when the heat sets in, head over to the water slide closer to the lodge area. The lodge is nice, but I feel it is over priced. It is run by a private developer instead of the state as the old lodge was, and it is priced over what locals can afford. We used to have our family reunions at the old lodge, but no more. This is the reason for my Very Good rating instead of Excellent.

The area is beautiful! If you have the time and energy, hike up the mountain at the New Horizon trail. The view on top is amazing!!! You can see the entire lake and nearby mountains. Went to Baldy point twice but didn't see any climbers...wish they were there.

I reached Baldy Point, one of the hills/peaks of the Quartz Mountains, quite by accident, or more by a combination of instinct and luck. And wow!! For the cool, windy but sunny day, that it turned out to be - what a wonderful surprise it was. At the parking lot, that I reached after seeing and following some signs of "Climbing Area", there was only one car. I immediately was able to spot two climbers who were already far up, busy climbing carefully the steep quartz walls of this 500 feet (?? - different signs and sites give different numbers) hill. I walked the trail around Baldy Point, until I decided it was safe enough to start the climbing with only my camera, my jacket and a pair of gloves which turned out to be very helpful in grabbing the sharp and rough rocks which were many times covered with smaller and bigger cactuses. I reached the top in time to see one of the climbers arrive safely and excited, before starting the climb down again. The top and the climb offered great views in all directions. The combination of clouds and sun, and temprature was perfect. Then I continued to the second starting point at the south-eastern point of the Baldy Point hill, just next to the Wichita Mountain Ranch. This place offers more trails into the small valley (sorry, forgot its name) between all the beautiful granite, quartz mountains.Then there was the area of the lake, which unfortunately is indeed terribly low (at least 4-5 meters below its regular (?) level). The lake and the surrounding mountains are still very beautiful, but the shores are filled with thousands of dead fish due to an alergy that hit them just several weeks ago, according to what a local lady informed me. The seagulls were very busy working on these poor fish. Sad. No visit in this area is complete without at least approaching the impressive Quartz Mountains Conference Center lodge. The low level of the lake has its impact on this place as well, which must be so much fun and a great place to stay when things are normal.This area is definitely worth more visits. And did I mention the deer? See the photos.

Pros: Great wild life viewing, trail hiking and mountain climbing. Cons: Lake is the lowest I've ever seen it. Also, facilities around the park are closed in the fall/winter season, so make sure you take all you need or you'll be driving an hour round trip for supplies to Altus or Hobart.

It's October 2012 and the lake is so terribly low it's heartbreakingGreat for hiking and getting away from day to day drab.

My husband and I stay with our RV in this park it was beautiful...the trees and green grass, was wonderful...The deer wander thru the park..really enjoyed it...the prices are very good!

Visited QMSP a few times, but usually to hike up some of the "mountains". Typically very dry, especially in 2011 and 2012, the lake provides a little respite and the hiking a little diversion from the flat Oklahoma landscape. Nothing like other "mountains" I've hiked, but a welcome change nonetheless.

What we expected was a weekend of relaxation and fun, what we got was anything but. bathroom floor not been cleaned, there appeared to be dried droplets of urine stains in front of commode. No face/wash cloths. Lack of a good night’s sleep do to the loud noise made by the air conditioner. And yes, there was even a cricket visiting our bathroom. Menus & wine list, covered with grease spots and dried food, My biggest disappointment is that no one at Quartz Mountain Resort seems to really care. Why bother to leave the cards (and a letter from the manager asking for feedback) in the room if you don’t care enough to follow up?
