in the winter, peaceful, low population--perfect! We enjoy being able to walk to the Camp Sherman store and trails to walk. Cold Springs Resort has movies to borrow and cabins facing the Metolius River or Creek front. Creek front gets late afternoon sun, great for cold winters!
The walk along the Metolius River from the store at Camp Sherman to the bridge is delightful. It is a pretty flat walk with a few rocks in spots to step over. We walked up one side and at the bridge crossed to the other side. Although dogs are allowed I would not take a long haired dog on the walk. You will be picking stuff out of them forever.
To see a full-blown, big (I mean BIG) river just pop out of the side of a mountain is amazing! I must have said "WOW" a dozen times when I saw it for the first time. You gotta see this!
fishing first class. A few too many campers, but can you blame them? Be sure to check out the headwaters, which spring from the earth in a torrent....
I certainly enjoyed my mile+ walk along the Metolius River stopping at the Camp Sherman Store for a bacon cheese burger and soda. There are literally miles of walking trails, across quaint bridges but always along the river. Not difficult -- just a stroll. Enjoy!
Excellent hiking trails, fly fishing, bicycling, and campgrounds. I especially like Smiling River Campground with many sites right on the river -- many with a lot of privacy. The Camp Sherman Store is a little jewel -- everything from flashlights to caviar! This area is rustic and unspoiled but close to amenities in Black Butte and Sisters.
We visited the area to see the head of the Metolius River. It is a short walk on a paved path to a viewing area where you can see the river spring fully formed from the ground. Very cool. Looking the other way is a gorgeous view of the mountain. The kids got a kick out of the very friendly squirrels who are not afraid to run right up to you and ask for a snack.
As a local if I am going to take visitors on one hike this is my choice. It is the hike upriver from the Fish Hatchery. The hike follows the magical Metolius River for about two and half miles up toward Canyon Creek Campground. Toward the very end you will see these beautiful blue springs gushing into the river. Be sure to bring quarters and spend some time at the fish hatchery feeding the fish.
So peaceful, easy walking and hiking. Good for singles, couples, or family. Start and the general store and go from there. Also good for bike riding. Go to wizard Falls fish hatchery
The Metolius is a must do during our summer camping season. The river is beautiful. There is a lot of hiking right along the river, the head of the Metolius is a site to see. The river starts right out of the ground. There are multiple campsites (dry camping) right on the banks. There is an excellent restaurant, a store and cabin lodging in the area as well. I hope you can experience the area for yourself one day.
I live in the C.O. area but had never been to the headwaters of the Metolius. Just cool to see where a river begins! There is a great paved path from the parking area to the viewing section, lots of chipmunks begging for a treat and a fabulous view of the river where a deer runs through it, meadows, trees and in the far off distance, Mt. Jefferson.
We live in Bend and find the Metolius River area one of the best in Central Oregon. It has everything you can ask for in a wildlife/forest setting, beautiful river, great family hiking, great but rustic campgrounds, large pines and the green of western OR without the rain.
The Metolius River comes out from under Black Butte a full grown river. It is truly amazing! There is a short walk to see the Head of the River but the path is paved so is handicapped accessible. The walk is through majestic pine trees. There are benches to rest of to just sit and enjoy the lovely spot. Chipmunks might check you out to see if there are any peanuts available!Don't miss this unique area.
Nice trails along the river and passes by the Camp Sherman store. Good place to trail run, hike, bike or get fishing access.
Very peaceful and pretty river. Setting throughout the area is very nice. Saw quite a few fly fisherman on the banks. Lots of nice cabins for rent in Camp Sherman. Nice hiking in the area.
