This is a wonderful little museum, in So. Oregon located between Grants Pass on HWY 199 & the Oregon coast, has lots of local history plus lots of other stuff, including the mining, Native Americans with baskets etc, a number of military time frames, early telephones, a very good variety, also has a barn with the Livery stable items etc, as well a nice house with fun furniture & decorations, really nice place & run by mostly volunteer's....GREAT JOB...people
This museum comprises two houses side by side. One contains an eclectic collection of exhibits about the local area. The other is the refurbished house of a local middle class resident. The exhibition is vast, and covers all aspects of life in the town before the collapse of the mining era, including exhibits not only about mining but about native Americans, the Chinese community, children, surgery and dentistry, a general store, printing, telephony, money, schooling, law and order, ... everything! There are some curiosities, like a grandfather clock whose mechanism is made out of wood, and some natural history, like a case of stuffed animals. The exhibition is full of interest and the curator, a lady in a motorised wheel chair, was most welcoming and knowledgeable about the items in her care, often about the individuals who had owned them. The refurbished house, both storeys furnished, has a gracious atmosphere. It is almost as if the residents have just left to go shopping, and you are wandering around at will in their home, like an exploring child who has sneaked in. We spent more than a pleasant hour here, browsing and imagining life in the town 50-100 years ago. There is a small entrance charge.
