We have stopped at Shaniko Ghost Town numerous times on our way to Washington from California. It's hard to believe that it's real because it looks like a Hollywood movie set, but it is real. It's fun to imagine what it use to look like back in the wild west days. I love history and if you do too, you will love this little ghost town!

Shaniko is a great stopping point on I97. It's a cute ghost town with lots of information posted around town and a (very) little museum open year round.

Easy diversion off Highway 97. Drive off the Highway onto one of the blocks, turn the corner and go back onto the Highway. Not sure what the big appeal is...but there are public restrooms located in the middle of one of the blocks if you need to stop. Only the gas station and one store were open midday on a beautiful September day. Not sure when everything else is open.

My family of five (including triplet 10 year old boys) had a blast for about an hour walking around this little town. They enjoyed visiting a store with everything (back of town a little bit), and some other stores, being put in the patywagon, and locked in jail. They also enjoyed, of coarse, and ice cream cone from a shop along the board walk. A very nice surprise on the way to Fossil.

This is a present surprise in the middle of nowhere. I spent about an hour walking the wooden sidewalks of this little town reading all the history that is posted to each historic building. Some of the building are open to walk through including the jail. A little spooky but very fun. It's worth a stop if you're driving through.

Stopped by on a hot Sunday afternoon and had a cold ice cream cone at a local store and walked around the 'town' taking in the history. Check out half of what once was the largest warehouse on the west coast! Almost every building has its history posted with pictures, etc. Take your time to see our past preserved for our education. There is a gas station and a small shop with sandwiches, drinks, etc. available. Nice stop between the Columbia and Redmond. Oh, also take the warning serious about rattlesnakes int he area- they are not joking!

On a recent trip to Maupin, Oregon, my wife and I decided to take a side trip and visit the Shaniko Ghost Town. A worthwhile side trip, Many interesting looking things and store, but the majority of businesses in the town were closed when we were there. If I were there on a weekend I would return and hope that the businesses were open.

My sister & I went on a road trip this summer and went to Bend Oregon & on our way back home my sister said hey lets stop in this little town (in the middle of no where ) what a great little town wooden sidewalks, some little gift shops allot of really neat old cars and horse carriages that were in the old livery stable all labeled with the date and make of car. It has its own tiny jail and allot to read about the history of this town that used to be a big sheep ranch . Check it out sometime we were pleasantly surprised & the shop owners were very friendly too.
