Henry does wine in August sounds like a blast I hope to make it to that one day. We just like to stop in to taste the new wines and pick up a bottle or two.
Henry Estates Winery was the first winery that we visited on our two day trip through Willamette Valley. It turned out to be our favorite one and also our favorite wines. The wines that we tasted here were the only ones we liked well enough to ship back to our home on the East Coast. Both the Chardonnay and Pinot that we tasted were excellent. But what made the visit so special was the quiet beauty of the small winery and the chance meeting of Scott Henry, the owner himself. It was late on late summer afternoon weekday, and my husband and I were the only ones there. After having a pleasant tasting inside with a personable waiter, we bought a bottle of wine, took two glasses and went outside to a picnic table under a large tree to enjoy the view. While sipping our wine, a pickup truck arrived and out came an unassuming gentleman who we thought to be one of the staff. He came over to say hello. Turns out it was Scott himself. For more than an hour we talked like we had been neighbors for years. What a fascinating guy!He told us of his original career in aerospace in the early days of the NASA space program and how he ended up with the winery. His engineering background is what made it possible for him to create his innovative trellis technique which has benefited the industry all over the world. We left knowing much more about space, grapes and farming than we thought possible!Bottom line, if you want to go to a winery with good wine, peaceful scenery and none of the pretentiousness that other wineries can exhibit, this is a good stop to make!
Stopped into this winery on our northbound trip on I-5 after seeing a freeway road sign for Henry Estate Winery. A short journey from the freeway landed us at a beautiful little property on massive acreage in Umpqua, OR. We are wine enthusiasts from the Napa/Sonoma area and found this place to have gold medal award style wines. We tasted a Pinot Gris, 3 varietals of Pinot Noir, along with a few other great reds as well. All of the wines are very fruit forward and this is a definite must for anyone who enjoys great wine. Slightly more than a year ago I had the pleasure of visiting Henry Estate Winery...and am happy to say I found a treasure at the tasting counter. Henry Estate's Muller-Thurgau is light and refreshing. The flavor is subtle and not heavy on the tongue. We have paired it with many foods, but most often enjoy it with a variety of cheeses where the true essence of the Muller-Thurgau shines. I have shared this wine with friends and they all ask for another bottle. I have Henry Estates in my "favorite contacts" and phone them often to have another case of Muller-Thurgau shipped to me. Take the time to visit Henry Estate Winery, enjoying their beautiful vineyard, retail shop and tasting area...and you too may find your treasure.
Scott Henry is the reason there are great wines in many cool regions, his trellis techniques were revolutionary. When we drove up to the winery he was hanging at the front of the tasting room and vineyards he founded decades ago. His wines remain top notch. The 2006 barrel select Pinot was sublime, my husband even liked the Muller Thurgau. The drive from I5 is pretty too. Definitely worth a visit and SIP or three.
It was a nice country drive. The wines were very good and explained very well. The grounds are very nice.
Henry Estate graciously provided wine tasting at our event held at a nearby RV park. The host was gracious, knowledgeable and full of humor!! Even the non wine drinkers (shame on them) enjoyed chatting with this fellow as he told jokes between telling us about the wines. Most enjoyable!
This has a decent sized tasting room and they have cheese and crackers out to taste along with their wines. There is no fee to taste and you get a decent amount to taste per glass. There was no rush, the server was very informative and allowed us to taste everything on the list. The price per bottle is reasonable and of couse, everyone will have a different opinion on which wine, white or red, sweet or dry, that they like. This is worth the drive.
The setting for this winery beautiful. The poeple inside were helpful and chatty. I look forward to stopping in next time we are in the area.
We became members of Henry Estate wine club, before the Umpqua Valley vineyards & wineries became the next 'new discovery', for one reason...seriously good wines. Especially the Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays. Several other wineries have opened in the area since; some with decent wines, and some with pretensions to have decent wines. But if your looking to add Umpqua Valley wines to your cellar, Henry Estate is the yardstick by which others are measured. Appropriately priced for the quality. Modest gift shop & nice picnic area. They also hold several events throughout the year, including their signature 'Henry Goes Wine' event in the summer; lots of fun!
Respectable wines, nice show room, pretty pricey and the folks are pleasant.
We enjoyed the wine and the little gift shop. The grounds are lovely - we ate our picnic lunch there after tasting. The young man who served us was very nice.
Always have a nice outdoor picnic concert in August, friendly staff.
It is worth the drive from Roseburg to taste and buy some of these wines.
