had a blast. enjoyed everything about it. will do this again. and will recommend this to others. My family really liked riding the horses on the trails. the guides were great.
I did theis with a friend in May of 2012 early in the morning. I suggest doing this outside the months of May, June, July, August and September due to the heat and sun. Had a fantastic 90 minute trail ride, horses were very easy to work with. I don't know much about horses but they looked like they were not well taken care of; once again I am no horse expert.
I actually bought a ticket on Groupon for my wife. I sent Barbara from Mount Charleston Trail Rides, and she responded with confirmation of my appointment. We drove out to the area, which is a bit of a drive from SW Las Vegas. They have a short training presentation, and off they go. My wife had an enjoyable time, a bit sore from never riding a horse, but the path and horses were for first timers, and avid horse riders. We will be back.
I purchased tickets for myself, my two sisters and my niece and nephew for the 10AM 90 minute ride in July 2012. We had a blast. My nephew (age 5) and I shared a horse named Brownie; my niece (age 9) rode a horse named Sterling by herself - right behind the guide (Heidi), and my two sisters rode their own horses, Izzy and Cole. We initially arrived an hour early, and were asked if we wanted to feed the horses carrots. We were provided carrots and allowed to feed the horses. The children were scared at first but warmed up. After taking a scenic drive around the mountain, we arrived at 10.We were provided training and a demonstration on how to control the horse. They provided the children with helmets and helped us in the saddle, making adjustments as needed. The ride was a nice slow pace ride through hills and narrow trails with views of the mountain. We saw various plants and small animals but the horses were most enthralling. A seven month old puppy named Bella came with us on the trail and walked in line with the horses. My horse kept trying to eat any shrub we passed. The staff were professional, friendly and courteous. We thoroughly enjoyed our trips. Special thanks to Heidi (our lead guide), Kendra (our middle guide), Barbara (the organizer), and the other staff who helped with instructions and getting the group set up. I recommend this as a great family event.Ways to improve include: providing pictures from departure and return; make recommendations on things to bring/ not bring for the trip. Where jeans when you go, the shrubs can scrape your legs…
A great way to relax for a few hours away from the bright lights of Vegas! Very easy to book a time, would do it again!
I'm a grandfather who made a promise to my two grandchildren that I'd take them horsebackriding after the end of the school year. I had Groupon tickets for four and was very excited when school year was about to end. I called Mount Charleston Trail Rides to set up a reservation. For about 10 days I was offered a day (and time) and I agreed to almost everyone of those offers. I was promised by Barbara that a confirmation would arrive in my mailbox. Ten days passed without a confirmation and my tickets expired. Since this was my first Groupon purchase I decided to ask them to unsubscribe my account. This was painful and I wish I never got too excited. I'm back to playing golf with my grandchildren and plan to sign them up to FirstTee. To Mount Charleston Trail Rides: when your luck runs out, look at yourselves in the mirror.
We went on a 90 minute ride. Upon arrival no one greeted customers, and while the woman in charge did have us sign a waiver, the extent of her advice for how to ride was "read this sign." For riders with no experience and kids, it would be helpful to have everyone practice turning, stopping, etc. in the ring before heading out, or at the very least have someone demonstrate. The head wrangler was rude, he stopped speaking in the middle of his explanation about how much space to leave between horses, got off his horse and walked away because people were distracted by someone moving a horse next to us. He was obviously cranky and we were glad when he decided not to come out on the ride after all. Other staff were almost equally gruff/unfriendly. We were assigned horses, with no easy way to mount them, having to dismount with similar difficulty. Many riders in the group had little to no horseback riding experience, and could not hear the lead rider explain how to go down the steep hills, (toes up, heels down, lean back) nor could they hear how to go up, (lean forward). Safety seemed to be of little concern, as stirrups were not adjusted properly on the smaller riders, and no helmets were offered to the children on the ride. There were 12 riders in the group which seemed like too many. The ride was only fair, the view was nice but there no explanation of the views, no information of the area.
We enjoyed our ride even though we haven’t been on horses in 35 years. Caution: You will be outdoors. You will be on the mountain-side. You may see wildlife. You will be in the desert where the weather is changeable. You may smell horses. You will smell like a horse at the end.Don't complain if it was too: dusty, wet, quiet, loud, hot, cold, light, dark, etc.You will need: clothes, shoes, hat, coat, water, sunblock, brain, etc. Please pay attention as you will be the driver of a ½ ton animal that, unlike your car, does have a brain. Don’t forget to leave a tip. ESPECIALLY if you used a Groupon!
I went purchased a groupon for this and went with 4 friends. The location upon arriving was absolutely beautiful and we were pretty excited. We go on trail rides often on vacations an this looked like a great time. However....When we got there, no staff greeted us. After we said hello, they didn't tell us what to do, where to go, anything. We had to pry all the answers out of the staff for every little thing. They were pretty unwelcoming from the get go. When we started riding up the cliffs, an employee was in the front and another in the back, the one in the back was directly behind me. His horse was literally bucking like the broncos you see on TV and out of control while we were right next to the edge of the mountains most of the trip and his horse was literally charging at my horse THE ENTIRE RIDE. Luckily I am an experienced rider so I was able to stay under control, but this could have been VERY dangerous and life-threatening for any new or unexperienced rider. He was supposed to be there for safety purposes but instead was endangering the group. It took 60 minutes for him to finally go off on another trail away from me, after putting me in some very dangerous and unnecessary situations. I could not enjoy any of the views because I was trying to control the situation the entire time. Also, when I told someone, very calmly, about what happened after we got back, they just pretty much said "oh my". Really, nothing else. Ultimately, while it is a beautiful view, find somewhere else or just drive through the mountains. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone, especially families with children! Absolutely awful employees.
we went on the 90 minute ride. it was relaxing and well worth the money we paid!!
A nice couple hours to get away and change of pace. Good staff and attentative. I recommend the longer ride. Overall a pleasant nice time. Enjoy!
Our ride was supposed to start at 3:00 but was delayed due to an accident on the previous ride. A guide was thrown and so was a child due to a dog charging the horses. Instead of cancelling our ride, they hurried the horses (didn't even let them drink water) and were yelling at all of us to hurry up, we had to meet the schedule. They were in such a rush they didn't even adjust stirrups or give directions aside from "Read the poster, that'll tell you how to steer the horse," even though no one had a lot of experience. They didn't offer any helmets, like other, more reputable stables around town do. A side note was there was no steps to mount on, making it very difficult for untrained people to get on. The horses were understandably spooked and tired, making them either hard to handle or else they stumbled along, depending on their temperament. The guides were harried and extremely short-tempered and rude. The ride was uncomfortable and unpleasant, not to mention only about 45 mins instead of the 90. However, it was so bad no one said anything--we all dismounted and went straight to our cars. I don't think the animals were treated very well at all. Like I said, they weren't even allowed to drink between rides and the first horse back (who kept running ahead, no guide interference) was tied up and the man riding him gave him a bit of hay. The guide then told him not to do that because he's just rewarding bad behavior and he'll have to work the horse extra hard to show him his place again. This was the worst riding experience I've ever had. I completely understand them being upset about the accident on the previous ride, but they could've cancelled or rescheduled ours. Instead they chose to take out their frustrations on this group of customers and worse, on their horses.Note: Mount Charleston Trail Rides and Mount Charleston Riding Stable are one and the same. Different name, same phyical address, same terrible service.
Went riding w husband here.the horses were all tied us w out acess to water. Some horses were very skinny one even went down while being tied up. A woman who helps out there went to get horse up when a guy w a name tag of woody screamed at her! >olling that we got started on our ride late and woody got on the horse that went down. Horses werent very trained and kids were ridding w no helmets.in fact they did not offer helmets or make us sign no helmet waivers like other places we have been. Over all i would not go back here or recomend it to any friends or family. The veiws were good our guides were hardend yaaahoo wanna be cowboys.and may i add my wife and i both have families in the horse industry! _he only people who should go here is aspca or animal controll
My husband and I took a 90 minute trail ride through the mountains/canyons through Mt. Charleston Trail Riding. We had a very enjoyable ride. We were provided with horses based on our experience (owned and shown horses most of our lives). Our guides were knowledgeable and friendly and ensured everyone on the ride was well prepared beforehand (gave those with no experience instruction before the ride as well as during the ride). It was totally relaxing and enjoyable and the scenery was magnificent. Next time we'll take a private ride and further venture up the mountain (as this is an option they offer). Thanks again to those at Mt. Charleston Trail Riding.
