Red Cloud's efforts / Cather Foundation has preserved the character of this small Nebraska town. The museum is interesting and the walking tour well worth the time!
Thank you for your kind endorsement. We're so glad you were able to visit recently. It is an honor to preserve Cather's legacy for future generations through our educational activities and preservation efforts.
We are deeply disenchanted to hear of your disappointing experience while visiting the Willa Cather Foundation. Our tour guides understand the importance of instilling a friendly and welcoming environment for all of our visitors, and we regret that your experience did not measure up to this standard. Within the next eighteen months, our facilities will be expanded to include the addition of a self-guided interpretive exhibition to educate all visitors about Willa Cather's life and writings. We hope you'll visit us again one day soon.
A good side trip to take when traveling through Nebraska is to visit Willa Cather's Red Cloud. The Cather foundation has walking tours and brochures about various sites that are highlighted in books such as My Antonia. They also have a very nice bookstore and staff is very friendly. If you arrive in the afternoon you might want to rest up before the next leg of the journey. You can actually stay in the second Cather home (not Cather's Childhood home, but the 2nd one where she was as an adolescent) and, if you're lucky, might even get to stay in her own room. The friendly people at the Foundation will arrange that for you, as well as give you a tour of the home and the history. This is about a 1- 1 1/2 hr. drive from 1-80. Another side attraction from Red Cloud is to drive a short way into Kansas (20 mi.) , and go to the "Geographical Center of the [conterminous] United States."
The Willa Cather Foundation offers tours of a dozen historic buildings and sites that were important to Willa Cather's life and work. Visiting these fascinating and lovingly restored sites is like walking into the world of Willa Cather's fiction. A unique and unforgettable experience--don't miss it!
We had a group of 4 people and our own tour guide who led us from building to building through the snow that day! She was very knowledgeable about all the buildings on the tour.
My favorite sight was the midi blouse Willa Wears in an iconic photo. It is there in a glass case (And was made by Abercrombie and Fitch)
The Foundation runs the tours of the properties associated with Willa Cather in Red Cloud. The day we visited, we had time to take the 3 building tour. Our docent was extraordinaryly knowledgeable about the sites, the artifacts, the connections to Cather's books and Cather herself. Cather's childhood home is exceptional in preserved homes. Most of the furnishing belonged to the Cather family and not just representative period pieces. We learned a great deal and enjoyed the little town of Red Cloud, and were even inspired to buy two more Cather novels to see how she included what we had seen in her books. The tour made the novels come alive.
I think Willa Cather is a wonderful writer so this was a must see. I took the 9 building tour which took about 2 hours. They offer a 3 building tour that takes only an hour or so. There is a lot of good info. You can see Willa's room that she grew up in. Be sure to visit the Willa Cather prairie. You can take a tour to see the country side but I ran out of time. My husband enjoyed this and he has not read Willa Cather. She was very brilliant.
Cather Tour, provided by the Willa Cather Museum in Red Cloud is an amazing experience for those interested in how the surroundings inspired this mid-west author. It is possible to rent rooms in the second Cather house quite reasonably by contacting the Willa Cather Foundation. This was the high point of our trip!
