the last time I was in the Joslyn I had four students with me and we hurried through the art exhibits. I figured it was time to go back and visit again. The sculpture garden out front is an excellent thing to look at. There are all kinds there to see. one of the most striking was the "covered wagon." right in front by the steps. There were other traditional sculptures and a few abstract also. Well forth the walk. The museum is free except for the special exhibits (which are very reasonable). I am one of those people who like to keep moving in a museum and look at everything possible. I also read the place cards beside them. The art is beautiful, as only art can be. I like the way the art flows from one historical time period to another and you flow with the various time periods and it progresses. The various types of art are what I like to compare. Symbolism is rampant throughout the various paintings, especially the art of religion. I love looking at the skulls in the painting, held or hidden. The special showing included pieces from O'keefe & Rockwell. I found it interesting. Talk about polar opposites. It was interesting.Overall, the museum has changed and collections expanded. The addition matches the original brick and the inside is well organized functional. Enjoy and be happy with the art!
If you want to experience local art in Nebraska it is a must. You dont have to be a "art guru" to enjoy. Many events are held thru out the year so be sure to check their website!
Great to see the varied exhibits! Original Rembrandts, O'Keeffes, Remingtons, Bierstadts, and much more! Due to a generous donation, admission is currently free, and we also enjoyed the special exhibit. My niece got in for no charge with her UNL student ID and it was only $10 for my admission. Nice staff and nice layout.
The Joslyn Art Museum obtains special exhibits so check their calendar and plan your visit. Nice collection of artwork too.
This is a nice museum. Lots of nice artwork and easy to navigate layout. The courtyard is really neat to walk around. My husband went here on a date and it was really nice and relaxing.
This is a very wonderful art museum that needs to be better known. They have paintings from local artists through the great masters. With a recent endowment to the museum, admission has been free, and this is a very good stop for art enthusiasts.
A local favorite with concert hall and great cafe in the atrium, that we particularly love! Must see due to Dale Chihuly's glass and the fountain court, besides all the wonderful art in very special galleries and wings.
We took 2 pre-schoolers to the new kids' area in basement. It's free and beautifully laid out with 8 station areas. Two use big touch screens to create art work, one mounted vertically on the wall and the other is flat into the floor.Another technology station uses props and art as a background to make stop action videos. Our favorite was the Greek based on turn tables and dry erase markers to decorate.Three areas used construction pieces to create art.
I was very surprised at the depth of the collections at the Joslyn. Its a great day trip museum, small but a lot of very good works.
We went on Sunday which is free, and had a great experience. Not too busy at all and staff was very helpful.
We went to the museum during the In Living Color: Andy Warhol & Contemporary Printmaking exhibit. First we toured the Joslyn Art Museum, which was interesting & had more than we thought it would. Then we did the In Living Color exhibit, which was priced fairly to go see. I would definitely return for another exhibit. Nice place to spend an afternoon.
This is a wonderful place to wonder around on a winter afternoon! The art collections are displayed well and the atmosphere is quite, calm and relaxing. Also a great place for artistic inspiration! The staff is friendly and quite knowledgeable.Overall, this was a wonderful find and a very enjoyable memory of my journey.
large collections, always a new traveling exhibits. The new Albert Bierstadt was beautiful. The impressionist art exhibit was very cool too!
Didn't like having to pay for the extra exhibits. Nice display of chillily glass. Small but nice museum. Nice gift shop
Generous donors to the Joslyn have made it possible to have this great treasure open to the public without charge. A few special events are still used as fund raisers, but everyone should take the time to visit this great Omaha landmark.
