Although there is suppose to be alot of snow there right now, its dry and cold. So there are several kinds of birds to view. We saw Canadian & Speckled geese, multiple types of duck, Sandhill Cranes, ground-dogs plus many I can't identify. Easy walking path plus a drive all the way around. Great signage and well worth the stop.

It's 7,000 acres .... and they offer a "Free" tour that you drive in your own car. Lots of wildlife to see. Great for families with kids. A really nice, well taken care of Wildlife Refuge ... and "Free" to visit. Thank you M.N.W.R.

Beautiful placeVery peaceful and enjoyed the birds. The pond hike was very nice with the kids. Bathrooms needed attention

always natures at its best. It wasn't staffed when we were there, on a Sunday. Serene, quiet, just us and the ducks and geese.

A little piece of heaven in a very dry landscape. One a quick trip around one of the ponds we saw Sandhill Crane, Canada Geese, Pelicans and various other small waterfowl.

We drew X2 deer tags and took a scouting trip. We spent one night at the Rim Rock which was exceptional! We then moved over to Tulecity for the 2nd night. The motel there was clean and had a comfortable bed but they failed to note they do not have air conditioning. The daily temps were in the mid 90's not a good night there!

With nothing else to do, my 14-year-old daughter and I drove out to the NWR to see the sights. We got out of the car and circumnavigated one of the ponds. We saw hundreds of birds, and got dive-bombed by anxious stilts. Cranes hunted through fields in the distance. We really enjoyed it.

It's not even migration season, and there were so many varieties of birds, I couldn't believe it. Thank goodness for digital cameras, as I would be flat-broke if I had to buy that much film! It is truly a beautiful refuge and even though I've been there many times, I still go back every time I'm in the general area.

such a nice place to go for a walk, there is a 3 mile loop that has great views, and interesting points of interest stops. even our little ones can walk this

I actually took time to see the reserve during my 2010 visit to Alturas. It is right on the edge of town and very easy to get to. A surprising quantity of wildlife particularly birds. Great short trip. Bring bug juice as there is water nearby and mosquitoes can be numerous.

great picturesque views of both wildlife and the surroundings. Great place to visit in all four seasons, each season has its own special unique-ness about it

I've taken the driving tour a couple of times, there is a great information center with helpful personnel, great display of birds and nests with eggs and the driving tour is just loaded with great waterfowl

The Winter Wings Festival in February spotlights the main nesting area for the largest number of bald eagles in the US during the winter. Many species of birds have migratory pathways through the refuge so the scene is always changing for birding and photography.

We had family business in Alturas. So it really wasn't a pleasure trip. One of our extended family members that live in the area suggested we take our nephew to the wildlife refuge just on the out skirts of town. At first I thought this might be a little boring for the teenager. But I was wrong. It is a wonderful, peaceful place to take a walk. The wildlife, and bird life is extrodinary! We ended up coming back to the refuge several times over the 2 days. We really enjoyed the peacefulness and the bird watching. I recommend this to everyone. Espcially if you are just passing through as a one night layover. It is wonderful!
