This is one of the best areas in the world to see a mass migration of water fowl of all types. The best time is November. The sky turns black with the tens of thousands of geesels and ducks coming into the rice fields and wildlife preserves.
Our granddaughter had a school project where she sent off a flat version of herself for us to take pictures of in California. We wanted to take her to Sutter Buttes (shortest mountain range in the world) and on the way came across a road marked Gray Lodge. After driving a couple of miles we came across a small enclave of structures which are the "visitor center" for the area. After paying the really modest fee (honor system) of $2 each we drove the roads through the reserve. It was loaded with many varieties of birds and we even saw an eagle stealth-fully hiding in a tree waiting for a meal. It was not even the prime viewing time and we must have seen more than 5,000 birds. I( understand the area also has good fishing and great hiking trails. My wife is not sure she wants to drive that far again for this attraction, but I really would like to go back there at peak season near dusk to watch the show. Time will tell. Check out the links to this interesting sight.
