As a museum fanatic, I have to stop at every local museum when I travel. The team who has assembled this presentation of history has done a fine job. On my particular visit, there was the annual Christmas faire occurring on the grounds. It was a real treat to view the history of the area in the museum and also visit with the local artisans. One docent in particular, shared many stories of her family and their connection to the area. The museum deserves a visit and a salute to the folks who have put it altogether for the public.
Carpinteria is a wonderful small beach town with a not-to-be-missed historical museum. Make sure you spend at least 30 minutes in order to take advantage of a docent led tour. The tours vary, as each docent relates their own Carpinteria history in addition to discussing the exhibits. Always interesting, with fun facts that you will remember!Monthly, the museum hosts a wildly popular Museum Marketplace (flea market) often with over 70 vendors....another reason to visit and support local history.

I am somewhat of a museum junky, especially enjoying local history museums because they reflect the changing ethnicities and passions of the surrounding community. The Carpinteria Valley Museum of History is a gem in this genre. It's not large, but has exhibits that appeal to the whole family - from ancient archaeological remains of the native Chumash Indians, to an incredible four part saddle that belonged to one of the original Californios, to the quilts and dolls of the white settler women, and authentic World War 1 military paraphernalia that belonged to one of the town's past residents. There is also old technology, including an entire early Ford pickup truck, and exhibits about Carpinteria's early industries, as well as photographs of the region in yesteryear. They also have a fabulous flea market on the grounds every last Saturday of the month. A great way to deepen a visit to this quietly idyllic town.
