My goal was to drive through and experience a more scenic style drive, but you'll find that's not the case when driving down 96 through the Klamath National Forest. It's not a bad area or bad thing to see at all but it did not meet the expectation of a scenic drive. If you plan on driving through these areas for the same scenic drive purpose I was aiming for I would suggest a different highway.
We drove from Yreka to Eureka, by way of a narrow curvy road with a nearly 6000' pass, through Sawyers Bar. Much of the road was 1-1/2 lanes wide but fully paved. The season was dry, and the road it was quite suitable for our rear wheel drive sedan. From Etna across the pass to the Indian Reservation we saw only a couple of trucks, so no problems passing. But it took 4 hours to drive the 150 miles. The weather was beautiful, and we picnicked along the Salmon River.
First trip - beautiful area - we rafted the river and loved all the surroundings - saw bald eagles -God's creation
This really is an amazing and beautiful area. We stayed at Marble Mountain Ranch, and traveled around a bit in this area while we were here. Horse back riding and rafting were a blast.
Away from the hustle of most of California, the Klamath National Forest has wonderful opportunities for fishing, hiking and camping. A great family vacation area.
