The lady in the visitor center was full of good info, leaflets and tips on the best time of day to visit Yosomite...I wish i paid more attention as when we got to mariposa grove there was no parking at all and we had to drive back to the visitor center and get a shuttle bus...she did say you need to be there by about 7 am !!Also there was lots of info on local bars, food outlets, gas stations etc, also you can buy your ticket to Yosomite there to save waiting in line at the park entrance.
We were given a handful of maps, shown where the fire was burning in YNP and multi suggestion on that meet are hiking interest and level. Information desk in Yosemite valley were crowded. But this place. Was able to take its time with us.
Great little information office in Mariposa. The person who we spoke to was very well informed, had lived in the area all her life and gave loads of information about the town, the local area, travel further afield and also detail about Yosemite Park.Excellent!
Our friends visiting Mariposa found the Visitor Center informative but did not motivate them to want to remember or want to come back to Mariposa. It would have been nice for the focus to have been on Mariposa events and not just a pass through to Yosemite. The Staff was busy/pre-occupied and did not make our friends feel welcome.
We stayed in Mariposa at Comfort Inn(was very nice hotel) before going to the Yosemite the next day. Went to visitor center. Got some helpful information. Staff there are helpful and knowledgeable. I know it might sound funny, but I just fell in love with this town. Nice visitor center,Nice Comfort Inn with a hot tub, small town pizza place with a salad bar, peace & quiet. Don't get me wrong. I wouldn't want to live there, but it was a really enjoyable stay while visiting Yosemite National Park.(there are no decent hotels in the park, and yurt is not my kind of thing).
Yup, Mariposa County is known as the "mother of counties". It was one of the original 27 (now 58) County governments when California was established in 1850. It was large because, except for John C. Fremont's Las Mariposas land grant, this part of California was pretty much an un-explored "wilderness". Now, Mariposa is pretty much known as the "Home" of Yosemite National Park but it is also the capital of the "Southern Mother Lode" gold mining region with many of the old mining towns (Mariposa, Mt. Bullion, Bear Valley, Hornitos and Coulterville), still preserved. There is much to see and do in Mariposa County and the Mariposa County Visitor Center is the place to start. It is operated by our Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce and the staff are always helpful if you are looking for maps of local sites, good places to dine or a place to spend the night.
We arrived in Mariposa for a two day stay, and only had plans for day two. We stopped at the visitor's centre to get advice as to what we could do for the rest of day one. The staff were very helpful, providing many options for us to consider. We ended up going for a hike at Hite Cove. We hiked for almost 3 hours, stopping many times to take some awesome photos, we did 9k, almost 5.5 miles, and enjoyed every step of the challenging terrain...
This little visitors center is well equipped and one can purchase gate entrance to Yosemite and avoid waiting in a car line if there is a ranger on duty.
