Have been on this many times but never a review of the Coaster. It's the only way to go to San Diego and back and sure beats driving!! Great senior rate of $5.50 return. Lots of fun!! Big double stacked rail cars for a fantastic view.
This was my first time traveling on a regular train. You get a smooth ride, good sightseeing, and few stops. I liked it. It was kinda expensive for us.
What a wonderful surprise to see that you can avoid the horrible traffic on the freeways and take a fast, efficient, clean, and cheap train from Oceanside to San Diego! We loved it and have told many others about it too.Parking is free. Ticket purchase at the automatic dispenser is easy. Boarding is just a few steps away. The scenery is magnificent going down the coast. The hour on the train passed quickly.Public transit should be like this all over North America!
We have taken the coaster a number of times, never disappointed by the on-time schedule, cleanliness and opportunity to leave the stress of driving to others. Senior discounts makes this so affordable and the photo opportunities are great. We live in Carlsbad, and my only issue is PARKING anywhere near the Coaster. Better to have someone drive you to the station and pick you later.
I had my doubts that I would like this but I must admit that I did enjoy the ride and have used this form of transportation regularly. It is very convenient and is quite timely.
We came for two weeks in Oceanside without a car. The coaster allowed us to visit San diego, Encinitas and Carlsbad cheaply and easily with no stress. A great way to get around.
We joined the "Coaster" at Oceanside and it takes around an hour to get to San Diego. We got off the train at Old San Diego on one day and the Santa Fe Station in San Diego the second day. Parking in downtown San Diego is very difficult so going by the Coaster was a great idea for us. The coaches have an upper level and the views along the coast were excellent and passing through Carlsbad and the other villages was a nice experience. We qualified for the senior rate (just !) so the journey cost us $5.50 round trip each. It really is an excellent journey to San Diego and wonderful experience.
We discovered the Coaster more than ten years ago. It's one of the best things aboutbeing in the San Diego area. It's very inexpensive, especially for seniors and persons withdisabilities. The views along the way are awesome! There's the ocean, palm trees, cyclists and joggers as you meander along the coastline. Such a difference compared tofighting the traffic on Interstate 5. We've even used it to meet incoming guests at theairport. Sometimes, we hop on it to go to San Diego just for the fun of it. If you ride a bicycle, you can take it on board. It is a fabulous asset which most can afford.Everyone should give it a try.
The Coaster is simply a great relaxing and inexpensive way to travel the southern coastline of California. I would highly recommend the Coaster for everyone but especially for those who do not want the hassle of the I(5). In less than an hour you can travel from Oceanside to Old Town San Diego.
We were in Southern California and took the Coaster from Oceanside to Old Town in San Diego...It was excellent....trains were right on time....the price was right...free parking at the station...the stop was great just walked through the tunnel right at the train stop....very scenic ride along the coast. Sure beats driving and trying to find a parking space...so cost efficient.
I take the Coaster frequently from Carlsbad Village Station to Sorrento Valley for La Jolla Playhouse, or Old Town for Old Globe Theatre, or Santa Fe Station in San Diego for the Civic Theatre or Balboa Theatre production. It takes an hour and costs only $1.75 one way; this works well because my spouse's office is in San Diego, so she meets me at any of these spots then we drive back to Carlsbad afterwards. It isn't so easy or convenient if you need to do a round trip because schedule isn't frequent enough and doesn't run late at night. This is really a commuter train, not a metro or subway with closely spaced trains running both directions. But the route goes right along the ocean with incredible beach, ocean, sunset views and then veers inland at Del Mar and runs through green open space until it reaches Mission Bay just before the Old Town Station. I've traveled much of the world, and this is one of the very best scenic routes anywhere, so DO take it if you can!
I ride the coaster to work in sorrento valley every work day. Beats driving, hands down. Thursdays is busiest, and any time during the fair going season. I won't go back to commuting by car. Even the most expensive pass is cost effective vs the cost of driving.
I love this coaster train, it travels all along the coast line for most of the way, so you see the lovely beaches and the surfers out in the ocean. Takes about an hour from starting in Oceanside and ending in Santa Fey in San Diego, right down town to all the shops restaurants, hotels and business. Also nearby Seaport Village where you can spend a few hours strolling around the shops and attractions. Also Horton Plaza shopping mall. Hop off the train and you can get a bus direct to the airport, right outside, also transport to the Cruise ships near by, so all very convenient to get around, made easy. The coaster is clean, with three desks, plenty of seating, some with tables to put your coffee and snacks on, free wyfy, a very enjoyable ride all the way.
We used the coaster to travel down to Old Town, such a scenic trip, some of which you would not have seen had you been travelling by car. Travel was clean and cheap, the only way to travel.
When we planned our trip to the San Diego area, we originally were going to rent a car. After seeing some comments about the Coaster train, we thought we'd give it a try. What a great move and money-saving too! We took a bus from the San Diego airport, and then took the Coaster train up to where we were staying in Carlsbad Village. We used public transportation our entire trip. We've taken the Coaster back down to San Diego to go to both the zoo and on a whale watching expedition. No hassles with driving in the California traffic and the ability to enjoy the scenery on the short trip down. I would recommend using the coaster train to anyone visiting the southern coastal or San Diego area.
