A little bit sad actually. Needs updating; kind of run down. Too many exhibits were outdated and had features that did not work.
This place is great for little kids. There’s lots of stuff to get their hands on. The girls loved putting their hands in the water and playing with the seaborne wildlife. They can touch everything and play to their hearts content. It is in a neighborhood, so parking is scarce right in front, but a block away is the free parking garage. The moon exhibit was awesome! Climb into the shuttle driver's seat and then put your space suit on and explore the darkness of the moon. It's small compared to the big city multi-storied places, but it's interactive for both the parents and children with many little areas to explore. Some people say it looks like it is done on a budget. Well, duh. You didn’t have to pay $30.00 to get in, so, yes, it is on a budget. I think they did a great job with what they have. This place is absolutely fantastic!
Went on an early Saturday morning with 2 little boys (2 and 5 yrs) and managed to do most of the activities before lunch. It seemed more like many playrooms with options to learn on some activities rather than a traditional museum. At the front, there is a toy restaurant/kitchen, a place for some animal viewing (iguana/fish), and a makeshift submarine and boat for kids to get on/inside. The middle part composed of the learning segments- how a microscope works, what's inside the paramedic truck, what goes on inside a medical exam. The full scale skeleton is an attraction for most little ones! Then towards the back half, you get to see how it is inside a space shuttle and the moon. There are uniforms (firefighter and astronaut) for kids to try also which make some cool pics! There is also a section on how your cell phone works (which really did not get the attraction of the little ones). The back half is another large play area with a small kitchen, table, books, smaller toys, and for some reason also a boat. The very back corner of the place has a mini archeology lesson with some specialized rocks and an area where kids can dig up fossils. The boys only found 1 fossil which could've been mor exciting if there were more to find. It might have inspired more Indiana Jones if they were able to keep the kids' attention. Overall it was nice way to spend a couple hours. It was not so busy at this time possibly due to the hot weather (it is without A/C and just have fans) but it made it more for the boys since they basically had the place to themselves the entire morning.
Great for little kids. Very hands on. They get to touch everything and play with it. Parking is difficult. It's very small, and it's definitely interactive for the parent and child
The city cleaned this area and refurbished the old houses. You can see what it looked like 50-70 years ago. Lots of history to enjoy.
This is above average for a local small-town children's museum. Don't expect a big, fancy place - this was obviously done on a shoestring. They put a lot of thought into th,e experiences and my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter was captivated by the activities, but the exhibits and activities were definitely "home made" not high-tech and professional.
This small little museum is geared to kids and is great for toddlers! My Nephew always asks when he gets to go there and loves all the things to try and touch. It's educational and is an inexpensive outing that's just the right size for kids. Not a whole day activity but you could spend a fat hour hanging there. they do have some special events on their calendar too!
We came here with our three-year-old daughter and were very pleased with the variety of activities available.
I went with my 3 kids aged 2-7 and my sister with her 3 same ages. So 6 kids 2-7 and they ALL had a great time! I read the reviews online as did my sister, we were both a little hesitant... And now I wonder if some were a rouse to keep others away. For the 16$ I paid it was an awesome deal. The kids favorite were the space stuff, the car and the dress up fireman. We stayed 2 hours due to nap conflicts, but we could of stayed another hour easily. Is it huge? No. Is it like a serious children's science center? No. But it has a lot of great little centers that the kids can play at. I guess if your child doesn't like to play pretend or explore it could be dull. We only had a great experience. And it doesn't smell.
After reading the reviews I was a little skeptical on renting this place for my son's birthday party. But so glad I did. The price was affordable everyone had a great time. The kids enjoyed the touch tank and the petting of the snake and bunnies. I was so surprise that most of my invites are from Oxnard and had never even hear of it and the ones that did know about it said it had gotten some major improvement. I recommend this place to parents that have kids between 1 and 8 even though all the adults were having such a blast also. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that it was super duper hot. But I know they run on donations and admission to keep this place going so if u pass thru Oxnard or lived there support the Gulls Children museum, because I know I will every time I drive thru the Ventura County.
This is a nice place for younger children. Lots of hands on activities, dress up, marine touch tank, play areas.
Waste of time not a lot to see and not the best part of Oxnard. it is rarely open and the smell will gag you. dust and whatever. The place needs to have stuff to be a museum, right?
We had our son't 6th birthday party here and everyone said how much fun they had. We went for the private party and had the entire place to ourselves. Great inexpensive place for a party.
Terrible! Very dirty! Everything worn down.. Staff don't care ! Not the same as it used to be!!! We waited to see animals live as promised however never happened! Worker was on computer watching music videos as a matter of fact a family walked in without paying and she didn't even care not fair to me because I just paid 16.00 for same thing! Very disappointed !!! Smells like urine super bad too!
I took four kids ranging from almost 3 to starting 7th grade. Everyone had fun, including me! I loved hearing the kids shout with excitement as they went from hands-on exhibit to hands-on exhibit. Perhaps my favorite was hearing my 4 1/2 year old shout, "Science! Mommy they have science stuff!" The whole thing was great though. The kids did some role-playing, some wall climbing, and a lot of exploring. The space was big enough for there to be a lot to do and small enough for me not to freak out about losing anyone.I upgraded to a Family Membership before I left and am thinking about hosting the kids' birthday party there sometime. They are making improvements to the museum, including a Lego exhibit (where you'll be able to play with the Legos), which will open September 30, 2012.
