You have to prepare gears and keep your body in good shape.Gears: good shoes, hat, sun glasses, grove, safety rope, water 4 Liter, delicious food, Energy Gel, water filter, hiking sticks.I suggest you begin the hike as early as possible. The hike will take 12 hours. It's cold in the early morning, but jersey and shorts are enough. You need a good breakfast, but it's difficult to get one in the early morning. So prepare some food in advance. The hike is much longer and difficult than my imagine. It's very important to bring enough water, even though it's heavy. Water filter could be a good choice, but there's not water once you leave Merced river, check your map. You need to take a rest, drink water and eat some food every hour. Keep your pace but don't push yourself, otherwise you'll feel tired easily. Remember bring some Energy Gel, it's fantastic useful. I was almost spasm when I was on 2/3 uphill. I was lucky to meet a very kind couple, they gave me a Energy Gel. I ate it and few minutes later I felt much better so I could continue my hike. God bless them!Good shoes will be very helpful. There is a lot of sand and rock on the trial, very slippy and dangerous when you go downhill, especially you are very tired at the moment. The cable is not so difficult for me. But when you arrive at sub dome, you are almost out of energy. You need a good shoes with good grip, strong arms and back. Safety rope and hook are good tools. I didn't bring them but I saw many hikers have the equipment. If you have backpack, the best way is leave it on Sub Dome. If you have to carry it, remember to carry it in front of your body, that will be easier. The view on submit is fantastic, I can't describe it. Experience it by yourself!Downhill was painful for me. I run out of my water very soon, and I walked three hours without any water. I got a little dehydration, finally I reached Vernal fall and drank river water.Plan the hike with your friends. Go hiking alone is a little crazy. Good luck and have fun!
It has been 2 decades plus since I was last here. It is still as majestic as ever. Walk thru the meadows for a better view and photo opportunities. Glacier point is closed during the winter though. Next time we will trek to Half-dome. Drove thru the 140 going there which made my friends gasp as we drove the winding rode. And we used the 120 going home.
If you stand next to the Higher/Lower Waterfall at Sunset and look up at the Half Dome - you will totally love what you see! (Write me a thank you note!:))Also - for those wanting to trek up the Half Dome - Note that it is only open certain times of the year, and there is apparently also some kind of a draw that picks people at random.
This is the most iconic image of Yosemite and it is truly amazing from every vantage point. We first saw it from Olmstead Point, then came back on the lower part of 120 to the valley floor, and onto Glacier Point. Since it was November, we didn't get a chance to even think about hiking Half Dome since the cables were down, but maybe next time!
I should have titled my review, and please do not be offended, "how I almost crapped my pants on half dome." Please read further and you will understand that this was a natural biological response to shear terror. I can honestly say that I am amazed the park system actually lets people hike to the summit of half dome.I have travelled around the world and Yosemite is absolutely one of the most beautiful places on Earth. We travelled to California to hike Mt Whitney and visited Yosemite as a side trip. While there we decided on a hike and half dome was the obvious choice. We completed the extremely scenic and amazing hike including the half dome summit in a single day adventure. I want to focus my comments on the actual ascent of the half dome rock which we reached in about six or seven hours from the trail head, which was a great experience but dangerous and terrifying as well.First, let me explain that I have a moderate amount of experience hiking and multi-day back hills hiking. I have even (voluntarily) jumped out of a perfectly good aircraft while skydiving. Half dome was scarier. Here's the skinny—#1 the obstacle: a slick, granite surface, a climbing angle of 45 degrees or more in places, a slick cable rope that necessitates wearing of gloves, wooden 2x4s that are greater than one stride apart, and finally, nowhere to land if you slip and fall, except to your death. Yep, serious stuff.#2 the gloves: there is a bucket at the base that has gloves to use, and return on the down trip, my climbing partner happened to grab a pair of rubberized kitchen gloves. On the other hand I got a pair of Sueded leather gloves. As it turns out the rubberized kitchen gloves are the best choice because they help to stick to the very slick cable rope. As I started to send I realized that my gloves were almost useless, because I could not grasp onto the cable rope tight enough without my hands slipping. The hike starts out at a fairly low easy angle but gradually increases to a much steeper angle of ascent. My experience: shortly into the ascent, and surrounded by dozens of people below me and in front of me, I realized that my gloves were failing. However, due to the number of people that were surrounding me, it made it practically impossible to go back and gamble on finding a better pair of gloves. My hiking partner who weighed half as much as me and had better gripping gloves had already nimbled far ahead of me. Shortly into this hike upon turning around I realized that I was what looked to be vertical from the starting point. As I hesitantly proceeded, with every step becoming more dangerous, and the incline increasing, the situation became absolutely terrifying. There were a few people who passed in front of me who actually were wearing climbers harnesses. And the thought stayed in my mind that this is a potentially deadly situation. As I proceeded along the ascent I kept in mind the advice from other hikers to use the leg muscles as much as possible and minimize use of the arms as i catapulted to the successive 2x4s spread about 6 feet apart. At one point, looking down, I was so terrorized, literally terrorized from the muscle fatigue, lack of foothold and sheer height, that my rectal muscles were quivering. I was engaging in small talk with people around me as a mechanism to cope with the potential doom of death. Seriously.I eventually summited. However, I could not enjoy a single bit of the exhilaration or achievement because I was so terrified on what the rumor was, "going down is worse than going up." I remember sitting there relaxing my muscles at the first level rock at the summit. One lady I observed said out loud as she crested the summit, "I just about crapped my pants. ". She did not use the word crap. At this point I laughed out loud, because it is exactly the same thing that I was thinking. It was just that nobody else was saying it.I ended up taking a few photos and meeting up with my climbing partner and then starting the descent. The truth is, for me, the dissent was much easier and not as difficult or as scary as going up. What I do this hike again? Maybe. But absolutely not without a climbing harness and rope. To climb this mountain in any other way and my opinion is pure foolishness. The entire hike excluding the half Dome climb was one of the most stunning and beautiful experiences I have ever had in my life. I love Yosemite.
The most iconic image of Yosemite is Half Dome. It has a different beauty at different times of the year and day and from different parts of the park. HOWEVER, climbing to the top of Half Dome is a real achievement. The view from the top is awesome, but the sense of accomplishment is also thrilling. Notice how the flowers change at different elevations of the trail on your hike. There are so many wonderful sights on the hike even before the final climb up Half Dome. The cables are set up every season because the granite path is so steep, you need something to hold on to.TIPS: Get your permit, as the number of climbers a day is limited, Bring plenty of water (and of course snacks-pack out what you pack in), Start VERY early, Bring gloves for the cable portion (there are some at the base to borrow, if you prefer). THIS IS NOT A DISNEYLAND RIDE OR A WALK TO A WATERFALL (though you do walk by Vernal Falls, Nevada Falls). IT CAN BE DANGEROUS. LETTING GO OF THE CABLE WILL RESULT IN AT LEAST AN INJURY. If someone in your party has a fear of heights, they can travel most of the way through the spectacular hike, but may want to wait while you complete the more challenging part.As we explored the top, there was a big fuzzy marmot walking around - comic relief, and some snow, even though it was summer. We are so glad we "made it to the top."
Go to Mirror Lake in the afternoon and see the reflection of Half Dome in the "Lake", which is not really a lake, but an open place in the river. This area changes every year depending upon the amount of rainfall and flooding. The area is normally very beautiful and tranquil, unless there are a horde of little screeching kids or loud teens, running around.
It's hard to up on the top, but it's very beutiful around it.You can see the Half Dome in many places of park
We went in peak Summer season. We didn't get half dome permits prior to arriving at Yosemite. Instead we just got in line at 7am at the Rangers station at Tuolumne Meadows the day before we wanted to go trekking and got our wilderness and half dome permits then (half dome permit is more readily available than the wilderness permit depending on where you are starting from - we started at Tenaya Lake) The whole trek was brilliant and despite the fact we spent a relatively sleepless night with bears hanging around our tent and in the distance trying to get to our bear canisters we still managed to get up at 4am to start our accent to the base of half dome. So glad we went early as there were no crowds, we were the only people on the cables (2 of us) and in total there was about 10 of us at the top and no risk of afternoon storms. Spent a good hour up there taking in the views and enjoying the peace and quiet. Tips - go early to avoid crowds and less risk of storms must be fit and have a head for heights bring your own gardening gloves - there's some up there but not loads. must have a permit - the ranger will not let you up without one get a wilderness permit so you can camp overnight and pace yourself
This is one of many views within Yosemite and I could spend an hour just taking in the view. The atmosphere is relaxed so you can relish the view
Along with el capitian and the falls, all incredible! Cannot miss it from the tunnel view at sunset.
