I grew up in a place and at a time where making with other than grapes was rather common. I've drunk many a dandelion wine. So, while I enjoy wine from grapes, I have a special place in my heart for fruit wines. They are no replacement for a well made grape wine, but they can be enjoyable for what they are. Maple River winery has quite the selection of pleasant fruit wines. We tasted quite a few and bought some lilac wine as well as some chokecherry. We also walked a couple doors down to their distillery and bought a bottle of chokecherry vodka. The gentleman handling the wine tasting was especially cordial. This place is ten minutes off the interstate. It's worth a stop.
We generally try to visit a local winery everywhere we go, so we were happy to find a winery about 15 minutes west of Fargo in Casselton. This isn't your typical winery, as the majority of the wines are not made with grapes, but instead with rhubarb, berries, and other produce supplied by local North Dakota farmers. There are some truly unique and delicious options: the lilac wine and honeycomb plum are not to be missed. There is also a distillery a few doors down to get vodkas and cordials, all of which are delicious. The aronia cordial mixed with dr pepper is near perfection This winery is definitely worth the short drive from Fargo. Plus you are supporting local farmers and the amazing work they do.
Delicious wine, great selection of Pride of North Dakota gifts. Salesman was very knowledgeable and friendly. I love being able to taste before I buy. I love their wines and always make a point to go there before I head south for the winter. We plan on bringing a bottle of the Raspberry on our cruise in November.
Great selection of local fruit wines, including some very unusual ones like dandelion wine and lilac blossom wine. Decent prices (about $10 a bottle when buying a case of 12).
Small retail space on the main street of a quaint town (no winemaking on site, at least that we saw), but worth stopping because of the uniqueness of the wines. Please understand that these are not "fine wines" in the conventional sense, but they are probably the best fruit wines I have ever tasted. There is a wide variety of flavors (including rhubarb, strawberry rhubarb, elderberry, chokecherry, apple, aronia, gooseberry, dandelion and about 10 others), ranging from dry to sweet, all with unique and intense flavors (and none that I tried tasting like common syrupy or "flavored" wines). And to be honest, I don't even like fruity wines (but these were good!).
Space is nothing worth visiting and the wine is interesting as a novelty only -- not horrible but not for any serious wine drinker..
I sent a basket, no shipping, to my brother out of state. It was delivered quickly and was very well recieved. They really enjoyed the ruhbarb wine.
My daughter and I stopped in while on a business/vacation trip through the upper midwest. She is a writer and clever in finding the obscure. This winery was on her "bucket list" of stops as we drove. wonderful we both exclaimed on the varieties we found. We brought back a case of mixed fruit wines to share with friends....just reordered... I usually serve as a digestif before or as dessert!
I stopped at Maple River Winery on my way to Fargo. It is a small storefront (easy to miss), but inside they offer a wide variety of wines, jams, and other local products. The woman working the counter was unbelievably friendly and helpful. When I told her what I was looking for, she made excellent suggestions and let me sample a variety of wines. I purchased the "Woodchipper" rhubarb wine as a gift for someone, and when I told her I prefer vodka, she actually walked us a few doors down to the distillery. There, they offer a variety of vodkas and cordials. I purchased the chokecherry and rhubarb vodkas. They were both great, and how often do you see rhubarb vodka!? Maple River offers excellent products at good prices, and the service I got was so fantastic, I left with a great impression of North Dakota and its people! This winery/distillery is a quick stop of the highway in North Dakota, and well worth it!
I had a chance to sample North Dakota wines from the Maple River Winery. They were awesome!!!! I really enjoyed the Apple Cinnamon and the Apple Jalapeno wines. I can't wait until I return this summer to get more wine. Keep up the great job!!!!! North Dakota should be proud of your great wine!!!
North Dakota wine, I could not believe it. I had to see for myself. I had a bottle of Apple Cinnamon and Apple Jalapeno. Both of these were simply wonderful. I look forward to visiting North Dakota again so I can have more wonderful wine. Thanks for a great time!!! I would recommend this to everyone!!!
