The size was hard to grasp from the interstate, and impressive up close. Nice local history explaining the significance, and outstanding views of the surrounding plains from the site.

Many towns [especially on the Prairies] erect large sculptures to advertise their town or district. The fiberglass cow at New Salem, just west of Bismarck, is one of the most imposing.I visited it at about 8-9 a.m., when I had it all to myself. [She and I really connected!]. It looms over the I-94, and is almost grotesque when you get up to it. Its rear end and large udder are a bit startling, but if you get into the mood of local tourist attractions of small rural towns you'll enjoy the experience! Standing under her, you'll almost feel the drool she emits! She's black-and-white, and at the top of a hill accessed by a horribly uncared-for switchback gravel road that will give your vehicle a run for its money! One distraction: I know it's necessary because of the cow's size, and the winds that blow there, but Sue is, unfortunately, fastened to the ground by cables, which are visually distracting. If you get tired of looking at the cow, enjoy the expansive view north from this high point in central North Dakota.A surprising note: Salem Sue has her own website! Check it out, so you can satisfy all your cow desires and interests! It is the best-known of North Dakota's large highway sculptures, and can be seen for miles around.

We have a dairy farm so had thought it would be fun to get the opportunity to take some photos with Salem Sue. For us it was worth the stop. She is one big Holstein!

While driving through North Dakota our family stopped to see Salem Sue, simply because there was nothing else to do for another 100 miles. It was a nice stop, the kids enjoyed taking pictures with a giant cow, there is a quick climb to the top of the hill for a good view of all that North Dakota has to offer. I am not sure that we will need to stop here again, but it was a nice place to stretch our legs.

We were travelling from Medora to Mandan and came across this attraction; seeing her from the highway from a distance. We decided to explore and were sooooo glad we did. Coming from a farming background; we were pleased to stop and see Salem Sue - world's largest holstein cow. She is even more grand up close. Do take the time and the small fee ($1 per car - although we offered more). A great sight! The local fair was also on and we were sad we didn't have time to stop and meet/greet some farm folks! Next time; we'll plan for it!

Short hop off I 94. Worth a few pictures and a panoramic view of the country. They ask for $1.00 donation per car. Slight incline to walk to the top of the hill.

We have visited Salem Sue several times. First with our young daughter and then with two of our grandsons. It is something you can look forward to visiting the first time and revisiting every time you drive by her. The kids love running up the hill and having their pictures taken with her. We collect the spoons and wish we could find one with her on it. We will stop and visit here again and again. We visited in Oct 2012Their is a gas station convenience store and restrooms not far from her.

My wife and I first found Salem Sue in 1989 during our 4 month "honeymoon" drive through the 48 states in our VW van. When we were driving home from Chicago recently we saw Sue up on the hill and had to go up and see her again. Yes, she is a big bovine prop on the hill but we were able to reflect on all that had happened with us in the nearly quarter of a century that we last visited. To us she is more than a giant cow as she symbolizes a sentry who waited patiently for us to return and take in the view. We were happy to throw a few dollars into the donation can if it means she will be there waiting for us in the future.

My kids coaxed me into stopping on the return trip. They got a real kick out of such a big "cow". I didn't get out of the car, but they had fun running up the hill and taking each others pictures. What you see is what you get with this one!

It was a big cow on a hill. Not something I would really go out of my way to see. Was driving by heading to Minnesota.

That's all that's there is a big cow. No other attractions, small town.

Many times we have seen Salem Sue as we were driving by on I 94. This time we stopped. My husband works in the genetics industry for Bovines - I took his picture and emailed it to his co workers. It was great fun. She stands 38 feet high, 50 feet long and is high up on a hill. You will see the farms in the area from the hilltop. It is said she is the world’s largest Holstein cow. It only takes a few minutes to stop. Take a break and take some pictures.

Just seconds of a I 94. if you want to see a big dairy cow. This is the one to see. It has a nice gravel road leading to top. Big trucks could park at the park, and take short hike up the hill. Can not miss it, south side of the road.
