We were invited to Carolina Moon Distillery to see a band which was playing there on a Saturday. While we were listening to the band we got to sample some of the whiskey and moonshine that is produced on site. We were also able to get a tour of the back area of the building where they distill some of the liquor.I'm not a bourbon fan but I liked the Black Betty and the Tally Ho brands as they didn't taste like most bourbons that I've had in the past. Like an idiot, I forgot to try the moonshine but my friend said that it was pretty tasty so I'll have to take his word for it.There are also a lot of gifts available in the gift shop so you shouldn't have any problem grabbing a souvenir if you want one. I bought a bottle of the Black Betty (bam-a-lam) and plan on going back once the Tally Ho becomes available for sale soon. If you like whiskey and want to add something a little different to your home bar, give it a try and see if they have something for you. Maybe you'll get lucky and a band will be playing while you're there.

We were in Edgefield on a day when they are not normally open, so we contacted them through their website to see if we would still come by. We heard from them almost immediately -- yes, someone would be there, and we could arrange a private tasting.What a fantastic experience! We had been before and enjoyed it. But now we were meeting with one of the owners, talking about how they got started and what their plans for the future might be (bourbon, vodka, and rum are in the works). Our favorite is the Black Betty -- corn whisky aged briefly in a heavily charred barrel. My wife's parents enjoyed the Ole Tom -- aged in a less charred barrel for several months.

I am a bourbon and rye drinker but had the opportunity to taste Carolina Moon's moonshine and have become a convert. I like it without extra flavor added (i.e fruit) - just shaken with ice and poured straight. It has much more flavor and complexity than I would have imagined. We purchased a jar (very nice packaging) and shared our find with our friends at home - everyone enjoyed it and want a jar of their own! They have been selling out regularly and are taking steps to increase capacity to meet the demand. The owners have taken old commercial space right on the square in Edgefield and have done a wonderful job transforming it. Stop by, have a taste and enjoy the space while supporting local business!
