We were very pleasantly surprised to find this gem. Very nicely done and some hands on displays included
We do a lot of road tripping on the I-95 corridor. This museum was recommended in one of our "driving 95 with kids" books. Wow, we were not disappointed. It was an amazing experience. We loved every part of the museum. When you first walk up to the door, you don't really know what to expect. It's in a small strip of stores in a small town (looked like that to us coming from urban center city Phila). You walk in and there is a robotic William J. Snider (I think) who introduces the town. There is a lot of interesting history in this museum... It depicts life during the 18th century and gives you a great description of the cotton picking industry... plus much much more. We all loved the walk through the main street recreated inside the museum. A must see! Especially if you need a break from driving. I couldn't pull my kids away to get back into the car (7, 9 and 11).
I live in the area and had delayed stopping in this museum because I always seem to get to Elloree on a Monday!I am very glad I finally had a chance; it was well worth the trip. The museum contains: an animatic figure of the founder of the town, several displays representing historical and physical recreations of early businesses in town, displays about farming and early rural life (cotton, hogs, rural electrification, mules, etc.), a South Carolina native American display, an upstairs art gallery with rotating exhibits, and a pleasant museum shop. The admission is $5. for adults and the entrance is through the shop labeled "Snider Store". The pleasant local volunteers will tell you anything you want to know.
